I fail to see how the premise is false, Apeman. Although it has been shown that the Secret Service Uniformed Division has existed for over a century, it also seems that the PATRIOT Act entails an expansion of the division's powers. Otherwise, why would the language about the division's powers be changed? I'm no legal scholar, but I'll try to find out exactly what has changed, when I have the time (hopefully soon).

I agree with tivodan..It's no more than a retitling of the secret Service unit that already existed. It has a function and area of operation specifically delineated. It relieves the local cops of protecting the President and foreign dignataries and places of business.

Don't panic! I know the sensationalizing press has everyone stirred up with a new conspiracy every day or so. How about the Presidents "signing statements"? Has that one got everyone stirred up yet?

No I dont blame uneducation of the people on their inability to see a grand conspiracy or coverup that does not exist. The reason that people dont care about the patriot act is because it does not change their lives in about anyway. If they are sending support to terrorist or talking on a phone about bombing the white house they have no reason to be concerned. I mean you tell me a case where someone was inproperly detained or rights were violated and I gaurentee they were doing something they were supposed to have.
