The article mentions stuff being destroyed but I'd have more confidence if they could direct the activity at the government. Sounds like they're just hurting "their own", as it were. | Igneous Magma Location: UK Posts: 303 | It's been described by one police officer as "civil war" and the army has been called in now: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4414684.stm Oh... and the first fatality of the rioting. One policeman also noted that the attacks seemed bent on the Police... | Molten Ash Posts: 120 | Well, the way i see it, France has 2 options at this point. 1. Beg the British and US for help again and then take credit once the rebels are defeated. 2. Rebuild the Maginot line, hope that will spark a German invasion and thus have them defeat the rebels. Though im slightly worried the French will start extraditing Jews out of pure habit. Seriously though. This has gotten out of hand. Im pretty amazed this sort of thing can actually happen. Its clear that the only reason this is continuing on the scale it is, is because the government is unwilling to go the whole-nine-yards. |

Maybe the French are trying to demonstrate some new way of dealing with insurgents or terrorists, it seems more like their usual debility. Et semel emissum volat irrevocabile verbum. Raúl M. It's important to consider what these and other riots are actually about. http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/1...8,00050003.htm It sounds like class, race and police abuse issues are the main causes. Grandpa h. Last edited by grandpa; Nov 7, 2005 at 01:57 pm. | |

What the news hasn't been showing is that the riots are going on in several countries right now, many of them over the war in Iraq. The authorities need to be mindful whatever they do in the vicinity of Paris will be precedent setting. If they establish a perimeter, contain the rioters and just let them do their thing until there are no more cars to burn or shops to loot, it will be expected rioters elsewhere will be handled the same way. I don't think this is a good precedent, I do believe the authorities should contain the mobs and I'd highly recommend deporting the foreigners. Rioters who've acquired French citizenship, unless they have retained some other citizenship, would have to be prosecuted under whatever laws apply. Those with dual or multiple citizenship should have their French citizenship removed (for incompatible conduct) and then be deported. Et semel emissum volat irrevocabile verbum. Raúl M. A silver lining here would be irreparable damage to the presidential ambitions of interior-minister-and-free-marketeering-vandal Nicolas Sarkozy. Fascists who call for the "whole nine yards" are merely displaying their ignorance about what's going on in France. French cops have been overdoing things for years, and this is the bitter harvest. The whole nine yards won't work any better for the French authorities than it has for the hapless American bumblers in Iraq.
