By now the story is clear - a major hurricane, class 5, threatens a large Southern city. The governor immediately requests aid from the Bush administration, but no help comes for five days leaving hundreds of thousands without food, water or shelter. In the aftermath, the Bush administration's FEMA is criticized as as being a dumping ground for political hacks and incompetents. President Bush is severely criticised for being aloof and uncaring.

The year was 1992. The hurricane was Andrew. The state was Florida nd the President was George Herbert Walker Bush. The outcry following Andrew is often credited with helping Bush lose the election to Bill Clinton.

FEMAs been a mess forever. Just like NASA. Run by incompetent bureaucrats who are more interested in keeping funding alive and sucking up to their masters than they are in actually managing emergencies.

Clinton's FEMA head, James Lee Witt got high marks both as an administrator and in distaster response. He was a Clinton crony but also a prefessional who knew what he was doing. He had served as the head of the Arkansas Office of Emergency Services and was given credit for reorganizing all Arkansas emergency services.

I have no love for Bill Clinton but I have to give him credit for picking a FEMA head based on ability.

I say:
And what are you doing to help stop this unchecked funding? Are you willing to withold your tax dollars?

It is funny how often people see the logic in boycotting gas stations due to price increase, but don't draw the same parallel between boycotting their own government with their tax dollars.

The reason? Gas stations don't have I.R.S. SWAT teams to kick in your door for the boycott.

Our system of taxation is EXTORTION BY FORCE, unless of course you COMPLY WILLINGLY.
