They go far back in history for thousands of years. They consider Medes who established the first major empire 600 BC and conquered Ninewa the capital of Assyrians,as their ancestors as well as the Kassittes who descended from mountains and rulled Babilonia for over 600 years. They contributed greatly to the Islamic civilization. Kurdistan is geographically united but politically divided among Four countries, Iraq, Iran Turkey and Syria. their language belongs to the Indo-European family, Western -Iranian branch.Their population is around 35 million, the largest stateless nation in the world. In 1920 Sevres Teaty they were promised a homeland by the allies. Their hopes were dashed away when the new Turkish republic rejected Sevres that was replaced in 1923 by Lausanne treaty which ignored Kurdish rights. Syria and Iraq were established by colonial Britain. After the discovery of oil in Kirkuk, Iraqi Kurdistan was annexed to Iraq in 1926. Since then the Kurds have been fighting for their rights. They were discriminated against and massacred including the use of chemical weapons by saddam until the set up of the safe haven in 1991. Since then they have elected a parliament and set up a government running their own affairs. Now they are told to give up everything and part of Iraq once again without serious guarantees. |
