Meet the Press: FEMA and the Red-Tape that amplified Hurricane Katrina

http://www.informationclearinghouse....ticle10121.htm

Quote:
It's not just Katrina that caused all these deaths in New Orleans here. Bureaucracy has committed murder here in the greater New Orleans area, and bureaucracy has to stand trial before Congress now. It's so obvious. FEMA needs more congressional funding. It needs more presidential support. It needs to be a Cabinet-level director. It needs to be an independent agency that will be able to fulfill its mission to work in partnership with state and local governments around America. FEMA needs to be empowered to do the things it was created to do. It needs to come somewhere, like New Orleans, with all of its force immediately, without red tape, without bureaucracy, act immediately with common sense and leadership, and save lives. Forget about the property. We can rebuild the property. It's got to be able to come in and save lives.

Yeah well, ya know FEMA's Goal is to kill everyone, and you are telling the truth, so now they are gonna come after you!

Katrina medical help held up by red tape
Doctors waiting to treat victims in tax-funded, state-of-the-art unit
Sunday, September 4, 2005;

Quote:
BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) -- Volunteer physicians are pouring in to care for the sick, but red tape is keeping hundreds of others from caring for Hurricane Katrina survivors while health problems rise.

Among the doctors stymied from helping out are 100 surgeons and paramedics in a state-of-the-art mobile hospital, developed with millions of tax dollars for just such emergencies, marooned in rural Mississippi.

"The bell was rung, the e-mails were sent off. ...We all got off work and deployed," said one of the frustrated surgeons, Dr. Preston "Chip" Rich of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"We have tried so hard to do the right thing. It took us 30 hours to get here," he said.
Quote:
While the doctors wait, the first signs of disease began to emerge Saturday: A Mississippi shelter was closed after 20 residents got sick with dysentery, probably from drinking contaminated water.

I just want to tell that I loath people that does not care about their own citizens.
That kind of people are the worst sort of un-patriotic drag.

Thank you for reading.

Yeah, it[s buracracy, you're point?

You make it sound as if all of this is just to hurt people and kill people. It's not, it's an unwieldly situation and I don't like it, but you are freaking out over it as if this were done intentionally.

It is incompetence.
Incompetence that kills.

To cut down the communication lines - what do you call that?
To stop the water that WalMart gives to the victims - what do you call that?

If you call it bureaucracy, well, I do not know what to say. Except that you seem to be an apologist for whatever.

How about the doctors that can't see the sick ones? Do you want a linky?

Vicchio is a long term supporter of criminal incompetence.

Interesting that sitting high and dry in the backwoods of Maine that he belittles the frustration of a local official actually trying to help the people of his parish. Disgusting really.

Just about all we might expect from you, V. Useless and clueless on your good days. Defending those who ignore those in need and attacking those who demand more.

Everyone wants to blame it on the NO mayor and the LA governor and the citizens of NO themselves, but let's be realistic. First of all, until the day before the storm hit the storm track showed the hurricane heading on a more easterly route (toward my town). The mandatory evac was issued by the mayor, but there's only so much he can do. Thousands of people in NO simply have NO MEANS of leaving - no money, no transportation, nowhere to go. They heard the evac call but couldn't do anything about it - if the federal govt. or anyone else wants to point fingers at the NO mayor, then they need to ask themselves why THEY couldn't help by sending buses and arranging AHEAD of time for transportation and shelters for the citizens of NO and outlying areas.

Now shite has hit the fan and everyone is blaming someone else. I don't understand why everyone hasn't been gotten the hell outta there already. It's been a week and there are still thousands of people waiting to be evacuated from that rotting circle of hell. There are many many people who want to help, but the situation is so chaotic - if I could get to NO I would, I'd do anything I could to get people out, going door to door in a johnboat or a dinghy if I had to, but it's so desperate there that I'd be likely to get my head blown off by some citizen because they're degenerating into primal creatures over there - people are either giving up and dying or turning into animals living by "survival of the fittest" and WHO can blame them?

I wish I could do more than just give money - the government should have been showing the same galvanized response that they showed to the tsunami victims. Charity starts at home. This video is just one more example of the chaos this situation is steeped in.

I don't have a background in what this guy is talking about. Does he work for FEMA? Or is he against it? Because he said FEMA turned down water from Walmart so I got all confused. What's his point anyways? Anyone care to clarify for me?

Aaron Broussard is the president of Jefferson Parish. A parish is the rough equivalent of a county in the rest of the country and he is roughly speaking the county supervisor.

He says that FEMA is obstructing the recovery effort, letting their incompetence kill people, in short.

You have very good points Your Tokah... it's a shame to me that so many countries have volunteered/pledged relief help but our government has so much pride to take care of their own and so many 'problems' in dealing with the 'logistics' of receiving the help that people die everyday while they try and 'figure out' how to accept the help... if they even take it.

Forget Fidel Castro and his 1500 doctors and 26 tons of medicine standing by at the airport... not acceptable. That would be too embarassing to accept help from Cuba. Lots of people (governments) are offering help that IS NOT BEING ACCEPTED because of logistics in receiving the intended help or other culpable excuses.. such as, what is it we're going to owe you now?

In the meantime people's lives are being ripped apart.. they're being separated from their families by government and have little to look forward to but "you better get a job and find another place to stay... these MRE's and water ain't gonna last forever!"

Most powerful nation in the world and can't take care of their own, with outpourings from 60 or so countries offering help... it sucks. It seems to me it's more a matter of the "haves" wondering what's going into their back pocket rather than concentrating on what needs to be done... taking care of these people that got their lives hijacked... no home, no job, no city... what the fuck are you supposed to do? Rely on your government to take care of you? It doesn't look promising... with all our 3 letter agencies that are supposed to take care of us in these situations.

It's appalling, but this is only one American's opinion....

Listen how FEMA is working against those who want to rescue and help people.
Listen how people dies (the guy who tells it on the video, President Aaron Broussard, Jefferson parish), begins to cry in the end of his story.
Listen to him.

Everyone should listen to him, and even if you can not help his people, you will certainly know what to do, at the end of the video:

Send this address to all of your friends. Ask them to send it further.
Please.
Give it to other possibly boards that you are writing to.

The end of the video was shown today morning on Finnish TV news.
People here loaths those that are responsible for this kind of actions.

We do not loath the American people. We are with you and we will help as we can.

Henry

Nice to see you Henry - thank you for caring!!!! I haven't looked into this so won't comment yet.

I hope to see you posting more again.

V, is there EVER a time you feel a government agaency does not act with perfection? Seriously.

No one said FEMA is out to kill on purpose - that's called a strawman, a fallacious argument.

If they are being incompetant and killing people as a result, they deserve criticism!

Sheesh...

And you're always telling people to run over to *wherever* and do something about *whatever*.

Do you, on every topic YOU criticise? If not, please drop that idiotic rant.

Thanks so much! :)

I hate to have to agree, but I have just about given up hope on Mr.Vicchio.

Vicchio, can't you see that the spirit of fascism is loose in America?

I feel as I should and yet I don't know what to do. I leave friday to go with the red cross to an area where refugees will need to be fed ans cared for. That's all I can do to help stop the bleeding down there. but what about at the gov't level? who's fighting there in the persuit of life liberty and freedom.

It is nice to know that you don't loath us. If everything works out and freedom rings, this all could turn around and be the greatest example of the virtue of democracy. your insight is welcome. I'm nearly done talking on the internet for good. just started recently. I'm not sure anything productive is happening here. the ones who get it are losing hope and getting frustrated and arguing at eachother. to many divisions to unite. what can I do?

Henry, your topic was moved because you posted it in the news section and the source is questionable at best.

Also, you cannot make two usernames Henry if your first one does not work. Contact me and we can figure out what's up next time. Try again.

I pick people who follow the rules and are not too focused on spreading their agenda. Now that I have a good base of moderators we actually would likely vote on who would be the next addition. For example. we voted for CapitalistPig.

So it goes
