| Conundrum Posts: 337 | I like the idea of the residents of NO being paid to rebuild their city. They get jobs and a bit of emotional healing and pride from such an endeavor. Of course, how many of them are really qualified to build a city? Or even an office building? Some could be trash pickers and street sweepers, of course, but there's not necessarily much pride in that, and such jobs would be temporary. It seems to me that most of the individuals qualified to build cities wouldn't really Need to be given such jobs in NO. It's the people who were already dirt poor with little education and few job skills, no assets, etc. that need the work now, just as they did then. Whatever happens, I think it's time we start evaluating the structural integrity issues of anything built on the gulf coast. In my town, beach houses are built of wood on wooden stilts or cement blocks. They're flanked by huge stucco condominiums. The beach is destroyed along with at least half of the houses and businesses every time we have a really good blow. Time to start rethinking our building policies since it's costing taxpayers millions, costing charities millions, and costing billions in overall damage. Well, that's an interesting question, but I'm curious about your premise. What do you mean by people being "left with nothing"? They have their own two hands and feet, and a brain working them. They have whatever financial assets they've saved up. If they own land in the city, that's still there and will eventually be dry. It's a shame that peoples' houses, etc were destroyed but everyone knew it was coming. So I guess I would "suggest" that all these people avail themselves of whatever opportunities they have, and exercise better judgement in the future than living below sea level in a hurricane zone. As always, there is a certain amount of help that the rest of society can extend to them, but in the end, the only person who can really help you is yourself.
