Affair gets general sacked and divorced on same day

Times Article

Quote:
A FOUR-STAR US Army general accused of sexual misconduct has been dismissed in an apparent attempt to reaffirm the American military’s high moral standards.
The decision to relieve General Kevin P. Byrnes of his duties in charge of the Army’s recruitment and training for such a reason is thought to be without recent precedent for such a senior officer.
General Byrnes, 55, had previously had an unblemished military record. It included service in Vietnam and commanding international forces in Bosnia. He had been due to retire in November after a 36-year army career.
An army spokeswoman said yesterday: “He was relieved of his command for a matter of personal conduct. The Army has not released the nature of that conduct, but it was not a criminal issue.”

What a crock of shite, you've got Coalition troops actively (albeit a relatively small number) breaking the Geneva Conventions where a blind eye is often turned by CO's and Senior NCO's (if the matter comes to light the guilty seem to get a slap on the wrist) and then you have a general, who has a relationship with a woman, a private citizen and ends up getting a divorce. What happens.....they relieve the man of his command and threaten him with further action such as a reduction in Rank and pay which will hurt his pension etc......what a crock.

You obviously have no clue on how the Military works do you?

Officers are held to a higher standard, professionally, morally, ethically.

Youc an go off on the tangent about the Geneva Convention all you want, no one is listening. The General did something the UCMJ says don't do. And he's taking the fall he rightly deserves for it.

Mr V, I understand all too well how the military works, IE 22-44553, Sgt, 1st Brigade Military Police, Southern Command, R.D.F. They put me through Uni and I am eternally grateful. The man has an exemplary military record, has served in numerous theatres with honour and distinction. Officers are yes held to higher professional and ethical standards, and so it should be...but this is a crock of shit. The UCMJ demands disciplinary action for adultery, from my somewhat flimsy knowledge the Judge Advocate Generals office recommends a reprimand for adultery, not the removal of command. This is an insult to anybody whos has ever served in Uniform, never done anything to damage the reputation of their Uniform. Divorce happens, like I said this man has a fantastic military record which will now be tarnished by something that happened in his private life....not his military life.

Right a higher standard. Sure. Like ordering prisoner abuse then lying about it and blaming privates and non-coms for everything. That's just fine. But have an affair and you'll get your ass booted. Higher standards sure. The "standards" are shameful.
Quote:
DESPITE MYRIAD hearings, investigations and prominent trials of privates and specialists, no commissioned officer has received serious punishment for any of the many confirmed cases of prisoner mistreatment in Iraq, Afghanistan or Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Two of those involved in the Abu Ghraib scandal have received letters of reprimand. One was demoted. None has been court-martialed.

By contrast, Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes, 55, a four-star general who served 36 years in the Army, was abruptly relieved of his command on Tuesday. According to his attorney, Gen. Byrnes, who is now divorced, stands accused of having had an extramarital affair with a civilian who is not his colleague, is not his subordinate and has no connection to the military. An officer familiar with the case told The Post that despite the apparent irrelevance of the affair, the harsh verdict -- apparently the only such demotion of a four-star general in modern times -- was justified: "We all swear to serve by the highest ideals, and no matter what rank, when you violate them, you are dealt with appropriately."

From this incident, it is possible to draw only one conclusion: It's okay for officers to oversee units that torture civilians and thereby damage the reputation of the United States around the world, do terrible harm to the ideological war on terrorism and inspire more Iraqis to become insurgents. Having an affair with a civilian, on the other hand, is completely unacceptable and will end your career.
An Army Affair

Hey Rick, the Army is evil, ge over it, no one cares about your view, if they did Bush wouldn't have been re-elected. The topic is an Army General who fucked around and lost command, not comparative views of your opinion on the issue of prisoners.

By a clue V. The men and women of our armed services deserve better than a Commander in Chief who dishonors their service by sending them into a needless war. They were sent without adequate equipment and with zero planning.

No, the army is not evil. It deserves leaders equal to the quality of our troops, rather than the scoundrels who lead it now.

And no one cares about my views? Well as 60% of American now say the war in Iraq is a mistake and about the same number say Bush can't be trusted, I am not in the minority anymore. It the war mongers like yourself who may be feeling increasingly lonely.
