Hr 1528

A Stalinist law is now pending in Congress. It has
already passed through one committee, and appears likely
to pass through another and come to the floor for a
vote. If passed it will force you to inform on your
friends, family, and neighbors if you have any knowledge
of their involvement in any kind of drug related
activity that is connected in anyway to persons under
the age of majority.

This includes drugs like marijuana and "children" who
are college students.

If you do not inform you can be sentenced to prison for
between 2 and 10 years. This kind of a system -
neighbors informing on neighbors - was one of the key
features of Stalin's Russia. If this law passes without
public outcry it will almost certainly be extended to
other areas. It must be stopped now.

This proposed new law also requires you to provide full
assistance in investigating, apprehending, and
prosecuting drug law offenders who are personally known
to you. This could involve working undercover and
wearing a wire to entrap and convict friends, family
members, and neighbors.

This law, as with so many others, is constructed in such
a way that it can be justified as a measure to protect
children, which includes anyone under the age of
majority, including many college students. It also
ensnares the private activities of parents related to
substances like marijuana. The government considers
parents who smoke pot in the privacy of their bedroom
after hours a serious threat, whereas Senators and
Congresspersons who drink large amounts of alcohol in
front of their children in the light of day, are not.

Examples of activities that could force you to inform or
face the risk of prison time:

--You see a joint passed to a college student. Call the
police immediately.

--Your child has a substance-abuse problem and begs
someone else to acquire drugs. You cannot deal with this
as a family matter, or in a drug-treatment setting. You
must inform on both of them.

--Your hear someone say they bought Ecstasy to share
with College age friends. Report this within 24 hours or
risk prosecution.

--Your sister, who has kids, mentions that she bought
some pot to share with her husband. Inform on your
sister or risk prison time.

I heard about this on the radio a couple of days ago. Pretty scary thats for sure. But I have no doubt it could come to pass. The war on drugs has already taken a lot of rights away from Americans. The propery forfeiture laws are nothing short of rediculous.

This is likely the section in question:

Quote:
`(2) Any person who violates subsection (a) of this section, knowing that the manufacture, distribution, storage, or use of any controlled substance involves or is intended to involve a person under the age of 18 or an incompetent person, shall be fined not more than $2,000,000 (if the offender is an individual) and not more than $8,000,000 (if the offender is an organization) and imprisoned not less than 5 years or more than life, and if the defendant is the parent or guardian or otherwise responsible for the care or supervision of such person shall be fined as provided in this paragraph and imprisoned not less than ten years or more than life.'.
Reading, it does seem like it does that. Whether this section is well meaning in intent, or whether it is truly authoritarian in intent remains to be seen, but it certainly does appear that it could be enforced in such a way.

EDIT: However, even if this bill does pass, the relevant section will (hopefully) be deemed in violation of the First Amendment, and perhaps other relevant case law as well.

I'll ask someone who knows a lot about legal matters.

"Any person who violates subsection (a) of this section..."

What does sub-section (a) say?

Just another nail in the coffin of freedom. I'm sure Mr. V will be along any minute now to explain how this is actually good for us. Hey, if you have nothing to hide, what's the problem??

Because marijuana and even hard drugs are nothing to be ashamed of, or illegal. People have the right to destroy themsevles, whether it be from not going to college, watching too much television, drinking themselves to death, or smoking themselves to death. The same tenets that give us alcohol don't apply to marijuana. Why? Because we can easily grow marijuana in our own homes. I assume if there was a cheap was to maufature cars in our own homes, and it drastically beat the prices of corporate made cars, it'd be outlawed, too. Just my 0.02.

Oh, and on topic, "The War on Drugs" is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. My parents did drugs, and they didn't have a problem. As long as we continue to allow the consumption of alcohol I will never be able to take this issue seriously. It's just a waste of national resources.

Did I mention my father has Libertarian leanings? My discussions with him might explain a few things.

This law is pretty dumb. No I'll rephrase that. It's outrageous! Have they lost their minds?? If I wanted to be a cop, I'd enlist. The state should not force me to become one without asking me first and then paying me a salary!

I would like to make a citizens arrest on Gov. Arnie for smoking contraband Cuban Cigars. And inside government property. (Illegal here)
Seriously. If the laws dont apply to everyone, they are only a farce.

I signed up and sent my letter in. Actions such as what this bill proposes are in direct violation of a citizens rights.

I get so tired of government and the special interest or moral majority deciding what is right for me.

I do not need to be protected from myself, it is none of their business.

I'm a conservative and even I consider this extreme.
