Make that an order of FREEDOM fries

From yesterday's Guardian:

Quote:
It was a culinary rebuke that echoed around the world, heightening the sense of tension between Washington and Paris in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq. But now the US politician who led the campaign to change the name of french fries to "freedom fries" has turned against the war.

Walter Jones, the Republican congressman for North Carolina who was also the brains behind french toast becoming freedom toast in Capitol Hill restaurants, told a local newspaper the US went to war "with no justification".

For as annoying as the frogs *are* - I never went to the trouble to call the "freedom" fries.

Umm, I hate to break this to you, fellas, but the fries may not even have been French in origin. They might've been Belgian. Have a look at this link:

Yeah, Jacques Brel was Belgian too. A detail. It's what's in the American mind that counts. (The French themselves associate french-fries with with Belgium rather than their own country.)

So, here's my question: is the waffle Belgian in origin?

Ok, here's my take on this: I think Walter Jones is a brave man. It takes a brave man to say he made a mistake. However, as with all brave men, he'll die young. Politicians never admit their mistakes. Those who do can kiss their careers goodbye. Sad. But true.

I hate to break it to you, tiny, but that's hardly the point. All that matters is that they're called French Fries.

Not if, as seems to be the case, most Americans come to agree with him. In fact, it's entirely possible that he's simply reflecting the opinions of his constituents.

Here is a bit more complete quote:

Quote:
But Jones now says we went to war "with no justification." He has challenged the Bush administration, quizzing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other presidential advisers in public hearings. He has lined the hallway outside his office with "the faces of the fallen."

...

"If we were given misinformation intentionally by people in this administration, to commit the authority to send boys, and in some instances girls, to go into Iraq, that is wrong," Jones said. "Congress must be told the truth."
Jones sails a contrarian course
If even an old-line conservative like Jones speaks the obvious, the War Party is in trouble.

Actually, I find the old-line conservatives relatively cuddly. It's the new-line radicals currently in power in Washington who worry me. To me, Jeffords, McCain and the like are the old-liners.

Are you revealing more of your private life than we really have any business knowing? A modicum of discression, please.
