Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

If you reintroduced Prohibition, would that not affect the free exercise of the Catholic religion by making the taking of sacremental wine illegal? Lutherans as well, and many other non-fundementalist faiths? The Bible can and does act as a moral guide to many and not conflict with a free society or the Constitution, but it can not be the absolute guiding principle, because then you have to decide who's interpretation is correct and then you are effecting the "free exercise" of someone's religion. You are absolutely free to live your life by the dicta of your religion of choice. You do not have to like gays, you can kick divorced people and fornicators out of your church, you can not dance, you can handle snakes if that is your bent. You can pray in school, silently, all day long. But you can not pass laws based on your view of the Bible. That does not mean that I believe to Bible is wrong. It means that I understand the difference between church and state. As Jesus said, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's." The institutions are and should be seperated.
"Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine."
-Proverbs 23:29-30 (KJV)
"Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted."
-Proverbs 31:5 (KJV)
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;"
-Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)
"Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;"
-Isaiah 10:1 (KJV)

Men wrote the Bible. Not Jesus.

I suggest you take a look at the thread in Philosophy & Religion about whether the US is a 'Christian' State. Pay particular attention to the quotes of John Adams, as posted by Starboy.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

3. I would try my hardest to pass and gain support for a new prohibition amendment to the Constitution.
This alone will gaurantee that you will NEVER become president. You can appeal to people's Christian values all you want, but when you try to take Joe Sixpack's beer away from him no one is going to take you seriously.

Apparently James thinks we should reinstitute slavery as well...

“Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward" (1 Peter 2:18)

"Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ" (Ephesians 6:5)

"Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them." (1 Timothy 6:1-2)

"Masters, grant to your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you too have a Master in heaven." (1 Tim 6:1)

"For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." (2 Cor. 4:5)

"For there are eunuchs, that were so born from their mother's womb: and there are eunuchs, that were made eunuchs by men: and there are eunuchs, that made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it." (Matthew 19:12)

And James, what was it that Christ was drinking at the last supper? Could it be that the Bible counseled moderation, not complete abstinace of alcohal?

James, I hate to break it to you, but quoting bible verse alone is not a valid debate tecnique. You may believe the bible, but many people here do not. Since the accuracy of the Bible has not been proven, it is only valid in a debate where everyone agrees that it is true. You need better arguments. It may work in the bible belt, but in the real world quoting the bible to win a debate will just get you laughed at.

Sonart: You are a mean, but very very funny bastard. Kudos on a great use of the Bible.

Thank You Sonart, for making my case more quickly and more eloquently than I was able.

Alright, I don't believe a man named Charles Darwin ever wrote a book named Origin of Species.

Go look in the library or in an encyclopedia you have at home, they have actual pictures of him, and the book in probably in the library as well. But then, you know that none of us are claiming that a)The Bible does not exist/was never written b)That there should be laws making you recognize the existance of vistigial organs/requiring you to listen every morning while someone says, "In Darwins name we pray.Amen" So what, exactly would be your point in that post?

James, I really want to respect what you have to say, but you are making it hard. You can prove that darwin wrote that book. What you can't prove is who wrote the bible (and I say this as a beleiver in the bible). And even you must know that god didn't write it.
