Posts: 7,197 | I don't care what colour James Bond is, so long as he speaks with a cut-glass English accent Mind you, I have no doubt that the Bond movies have been redone by Hong Kong cinema SOMEWHERE.... I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. -George Best, on being asked what he did with his footballing fortunes. |

I don't care if there were white slaves... there were not any in the US... take this book to a palce where there were and reconstruct it all you want... bring it into moddern day socity... but start playing around with things to make people feal better about their nations history is totally wrong. This book may have been fiction, but it's still a rather interesting acount of our history. Take a look at The Jungle, thats a fiction piece too... but place it in 1950 with black people and you have destroyed it beyond all recognition. This is an imporant literary work that I was forced to read but didn't mind it in the end. It's a good book, it's a good story... yes jim was black and yes... he was a slave... and huck was white... so what... who cares, this is the way it should be if it's going to be a period piece. Now take it out of context, make jim a lawyer... and huck a lowly paid surf who works for jim and they run off and have a good time. The thing is I think the main reason for a black huck and white jim is to make people forget about what happend... or to confsue people about the history and where it led us... fiction can be so much more important about our pasts then non-fiction. The scarlet letter... 1984, ilustarted man, farighheigh 451, tons of very important books that look at an aspect of scoity. As a social comentary of the times huck is a very important piece and shoudln't be altered for artistic vision... if you take it out of context and period... and say it's based on it... go for it... |
