Another Bad Week in Iraq, etc.

Before the war is ended, the war party assumes the divine right to denounce and silence all opposition to war as unpatriotic and cowardly.
– Senator Robert M. La Follette

And not good news for the prisoner abuse cover-up either. From the front page of the NY Times this morning:

In U.S. Report, Brutal Details of 2 Afghan Inmates' Deaths

Typically the army claimed it was a few bad apples while their own report made it clear that the abuse was widespread.

And in the "Where is Lindee When We need her?" department, photos of Saddam in his underwear have been released. No not AbuGhrab-like but unbelieveably stupid given all that has gone before.

Its OK if we torture Iraqis but don't let us catch you doing it!

Hypocrisy is constant in these kinds of things. Just look at our allies, who tend to have really lousy human rights records. Like Uzbekistan which has reportedly opened fire randomly at protestors and such. Also, Pakistan, Israel, Colombia and Indonesia are pretty bad as well.
We shouldn't be allied with these countries, but we are, most likely for economic reasons.

The war on terrorism proceeds apace, casualty rates among Coalitioneers are barelly inching over 2 per day (an average they've held since the infamous Bushian victory speech on Mayday on that aircraft carrier). The most significant developments are an increased terrorist toll on Iraqi civilians as Sunnis seek to secure a bigger role in government with bombs after boycotting the elections. On Mexican TV they described a new terrorist car-bombing tactic involving use of 2 vehicles; one goes off, as the crowd gathers to try and help, a second vehicle plows in and explodes. On a single day 3 such attacks took place. This would suggest the "insurgents" have recruited enough "martyrs". I also saw a note saying one recent martyr caught alive had Down syndrome symptoms and this is an innovation. I don't think the "insurgency" or terrorism has grown, seems more like after Fallujah they've retrenched.
