Mother of all Smokescreens

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story...5,00.html?=rss

This article is quite a bit different from the article at http://edition.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS...ood/index.html

CNN didn't show all of it. I'm hoping to find a transcript. Maybe C-Span will show it all.

Anyway, he appeared to kick some butt. Talked about the murderous sanctions and the "puppet government" and how this whole thing was a smokescreen.

Why aren't these Senators being grilled for their part in Bush's crimes?

Nice to see a British politician in action.
To quote a bit from the Guardian article;
Quote:
George Galloway today accused US senators of manufacturing "the mother of all smokescreens" as he defended himself from charges that he profited from Iraqi oil sales.
The anti-war Respect MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, in east London, told the Senate subcommittee it had made a "schoolboy howler" in its investigation of illegal Iraqi oil sales. He said it was attempting to divert attention from the aftermath of the US-led invasion of Iraq.

In a defiant performance on Capitol Hill, Mr Galloway said senators had confused the dating of evidence against him and relied too much on the testimony of a former Iraqi vice president held prisoner in Abu Ghraib.

"I know that standards have slipped over the last few years in Washington, but for a lawyer you are remarkably cavalier with any idea of justice," he told Senator Norm Coleman, the Republican subcommittee chairman.

"I am here today - but last week you already found me guilty. You traduced my name around the world without ever having asked me a single question, without ever having contacted me, without ever having written to me or telephoned me, without any contact with me whatsoever - and you call that justice."

Mr Galloway's testimony rested on two key points: that the documents naming him in the senate report were the same documents the Daily Telegraph had relied upon in a story he later successfully sued over, and that the subcommittee had no evidence he had made the financial gains from Iraqi oil that it alleged.

"What counts is not the names on the paper. What counts is where's the money, senator? Who paid me money, senator? Who paid me hundreds of thousands of dollars?

"The answer to that is nobody - and if you had anybody who paid me a penny, you would have produced them here today."

I can't speak to the facts of the case but Galloway was damned amusing. Senators who are used to having their asses kissed got their butts kicked instead.

Out of curiosity, how much publicity is this story getting in the US? It should be prime time, if it already isn't.

Galloway - "If you had evidence that I did this it would be public!"
Translation - "Damn I hid everything good!"

If the Senators can't do a better job with the evidence before they start making charges they deserve to have their butts kicked.

Maybe they should take a lesson from the military. They have done an adequate, if belated job, at covering up the report that Newsweek quoted regarding Koran trashing. Now they can blame the "liberal" media and go back to abusing prisoners.

That about sums it up. We can't touch the man, even if we had an 8x10 glossy of his hand in the cookie jar. It's a circus and a dumb one.

Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route?

I also enjoyed how he was careful to point out that the "puppet government" predated the fraudulent documents.

Priceless.

I enjoyed this, Galloway did very well at attacking the disinformation propogating from the senate, and indeed attacking the hypocracy and jingoism of the US. No small feet when you look at where he was sitting in relation to where the senators were sitting, it must have been highly imposing. I, for one, am looking forward to watching the House of Commons when Mr Galloway speaks.

CNN did a broadcast live of Galloway completely owning Sen. Coleman. That scot is one literate and well-spoken man. This has got to rate #1 as one of the more exciting confrontations between opposing politicians I have ever seen.

It was damned unsporting of the chap to speak to the Senate commitee like that....its not like they have made unsupported accusations based on sketchy testimony from known members of the Ba'athist regieme and published them as fact without ever asking the man to come and defend himself prior to publication. He has also been investigated by the Commons commite on charitable trusts and exonerated of all wrond doing.

The man is a pompous pius ass.....but he has been wronged and I for one am impressed with the response given by him.

George Galloway certainly knows how to argue, that's for sure. It'll be interesting to see how this affair continues....

Excellent link, and while I know little about Galloway, I applaud his tactics, and no BS demeanor when dealing with the pansy ass senate.
