China's Taiwan Policy Suffers Another Setback

As President Chen wins a crucial vote.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4546437.stm

"I would like to thank the Chinese Communist Party, because each time there is pressure from China, the people show that democracy is what people embrace here in Taiwan," she said.

"One billion three hundred million Chinese friends on the mainland and (Chinese) President Hu Jintao, you have heard the voice of Taiwan's people, Taiwan belongs to its 23 million people."

-----Annette Lu, Vice-President Of Taiwan----

Oh Boy.... China, do not do anything stupid please.....

Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route?

I cheer the people of Taiwan, I fear for the people of Taiwan, I pray for the people of Taiwan.

Do more than pray. Support their quest for self-determination. Tell the commies to leave Taiwan alone.

Everytime I mail out my Christmas cards, I send the Chinese Premier one saying "Merry Christmas leave Taiwan to Taiwan!"

They never send me one in return... so sad.

From this banter trying to pass for discussion, it certainly appears that neither of you may know much about what is going on in either Taiwan or China. Taiwan is dependent on China. China is dependent on China and anyone who uses a computer is very dependent on Taiwan.

There was an interesting article in Business Week - Why Taiwan Matters

Looks like the Taiwanese are acting like Americans when it comes to voting. A 23 percent turnout:

Quote:
Elections in Taiwan on Saturday for delegates to a constitutional assembly drew the lowest turnout of any islandwide elections in recent Taiwanese history. Most voters ignored the balloting although it could have a bearing on relations with China.
Few in Taiwan Bother to Vote on Constitutional Assembly

It was a weak turn out, normally they coem out in droves to vote. Perhaps it was the change in voting for a party vice a person?

You know its funny, Taiwan is actually run by traitors who lost the civil war (they're like the CSA).

The REAL Taiwanese - ie. the aborigines of Taiwan, are being oppressed by the Taiwanese government, and their voices are ignored.

Its like the Confederate States of America lost the Civil War, then fled to Haiti, and oppressed the Haitian people, then declared a "Free Haiti State" ruled by Americans.

Maybe Taiwan should stop oppressing their native people before they have the gall to demand some sort of independence.

Well currently we cant do without Taiwan so they better stop making noises about independence and work towards it more slowly. Fact is China might be more willing to let them go if they were not so crucial.

I don't regard this as a setback. This election is not important. It elects just a special task assembly to amend the constitution, and the amendment will not touch the issue of independence. The constitution will be still the one made in China. They are not making a Taiwan constitution.

China does not care which party leads this election.

Allen,

If you get a moment I would be interested in a Taiwanese perspective on the Business Week article I posted earlier. Is is on target? Where does it miss the point? I've repeated the link below.

Thanks.

I am not Taiwanese. I am a mainland Chinese. Therefore I cannot give you a Taiwanese perspective.
But I can give you a Chinese perspective. The taiwanese companies need to create their own brand in order to get a better margin. And mainland China is a perfect place for them to play in the long run.

Sorry for my confusion.

There was one comment in the article that I found very interesting. The Americans think they are outsourcing manufacturing while the Taiwanese think they have it backwards. The Taiwanese think that they are outsourcing marketing and distribution.

The american version is obviously closer to the truth. There might be some execeptions, but overally taiwanese coporations are just doing labour work for American companies. The final products bear American brands like HP, Dell, Intel etc. American companies take most of the profit and decide who get how much share of it. Taiwanese companies know this clearly.

Mainland China as a market provides an once in life chance for those comapnies to get out of that predicament.
