| Navy Veteran Location: Texas Posts: 6,335 | Brac List WOW. Talk about some big hits, Ellsworth S.D., major hit, Groton going down, Pascagoula... Lotta unhappy people out there. Maine is being slapped hard, I was wrong that Brunswick would close, but we're losing 2400 active personel thus the base will be just an empty airfield with a reserve component to keep the runways open "just in case" Man big stuff. Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route? That is until alternative sources come on line. I plan on getting a hybrid next time around. Live Long and Prosper (Genetics and Capitalism) |

If the exist why haven't they, or some of them been opened yet? We do have massive amounts of people invading the borders, so why haven't these camps be activated? | Supercalifragilistic Posts: 431 | Personally, I think that people are overlooking the fact that this has been government policy since the end of WWII. Most bases these days are a remnant from that era, which had far greater military needs than (we can only hope) will ever be necessary in our lifetimes. These bases were major employers at that time as well, but life still went on without them once they were closed down. Afterall, if there is no longer a need for these facilities, why should we (as tax payers) be required to shoulder the burden of continuing to employ them? That money would be better spent towards future facilities that are not only more updated, but will likely generate even more jobs. The problem with towns that revolve around a military base or similar government facility is that job opportunities there are actually limited by said base or facility being the only real source of employment out there. Although the facility does contribute to job opportunities, the community’s growth is for the most part limited to their availability as a result. As the community grows, more of the people within it will find that they have better chances of employment elsewhere. We see these same decisions made every day whenever our state closes down an old penitentiary or power plant with plans to build a newer or larger facility elsewhere. Although it is regrettable that people will inevitably lose their jobs, this is a natural process and we only have further growth and more up-to-date facilities to look forward to as a result. I wish that people wouldn't be so pessimistic; looking forward has always been The American Way. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. |

The other thing is, his wife says they weren't even there to begin with. She packed his bags and was with him until past the baggage check-in. No one can figure out a reason for his arrest other then just more bad press for Syria. This man is Syrian-born, but an American citizen of 20 years. He was in the security department of the airport for 10. He is being held with no contact to family or his lawyer allowed for supposedly carrying a stun-gun, a metal-detector, rounds of ammunition (no weapon) and cash. None of these things are illegal to have in your carry on, and if they were, they should have made him remove them at DFW instead of giving them the OK and then arresting him in Detroit. His wife said he did have a metal detector, the kind my friend planned on taking home to a relative who wanted one that isn't available there, and cash. No more than a certain amount is allowed, but usually a fine is paid if you're caught with more, not inprisonment. She said absolutely there was no stun gun or ammo. and if there were, again, this was in carry-on luggage, so in no way a threat. And OK'd by DFW security. His bags were searced there. Would this have happened if he weren't Syrian-born? I don't think so. The whole thing makes no sense, but he isn't the only victim of the new Patriot Act laws labeling people 'combatants' to usurp their constitutional rights. | Molten Ash Posts: 28 | Stun guns and ammunition are absolutely prohibited in carry-on luggage. The fact that your criminal friend-of-a-friend wasn't caught at DFW didn't suddenly make him exempt. You only have to report currency if you're carrying $10K or more on an international flight -- so if he had more than that, it wasn't a crime on the domestic leg of his flight. He sure as hell sounds like someone I wouldn't want on a plane with me. |
