The Pentagon's New Generation of Secret Military Bases

"I asked a member of the Air Force medical team about the casualties they see like these. Many, as with this flight, were coming from Afghanistan, he told me. "A lot from the Horn of Africa," he added. "You don't really hear about that in the media."

"Where in Africa?" I asked. He said he didn't know exactly, but generally from the Horn, often with critical injuries. "A lot out of Djibouti," he added, referring to Camp Lemonnier, the main US military base in Africa, but from "elsewhere" in the region, too.

I'm not familiar with Mother Jones so don't know how much credence to give this article. I sincerely hope it's an exaggeration of our current military activities in Africa.

Small scale operations in Africa are very old news. They are branches of Operation Enduring Freedom, which was begun in 2001 about a month after 9/11.
Operation Enduring Freedom (Horn of Africa-Started in 2002)
Operation Enduring Freedom (Trans Saharah-Started in 2007)

The lillypads are allegedly more efficient. I like that. My main concern would be less transparency.

The only transparency we seem to get these days is when one party can use information for their own political benefit.

What party would that be? What information are they using? How are they using this information for their own political benefit? What is the transparency?

I think he was refering to both parties. It is an exaggeration of course, but there is some truth to it. Per instance, the Obama Administration made sure we got to hear all about how involved it was in killing Osama and planting the Stuxnet virus in Iranian nuclear facilities, but is completely tight-lipped about how involved it was in the disasterous fast-and-furious gun smuggling operation.

Are you blaming Obama for the gunwalking scandal? What is your issue with the Stuxnet virus? What are you referring to when you say "killing" Obama?

The fact that the administration in effect held forth on those topics that made it look good, but contrastingly refuses to release detail regrading the gun walking scandal, suggests that it is dispensing this sort of information in a cherrypicked fashion: divulging what makes it look good and hiding what makes it look bad.

The gunwalking operation is over. It seems very likely the remaining secrecy main purpose is to allow certain people to cover their asses. I am not implying both parties don't do this sort of thing. Bush did it for a much more nefarious purpose when he cherrypicked which parts of the Iraqi WMD intelligence to leak to the public. He also made some of it up for that matter; but Obama is guilty of cherrypicked leaks also.

The Administration is not supposed to reveal highly classified information. The gun walking scandal started in 2006 during the Bush Administration. As soon as the Obama Administration found out about it they put and end to it and began indictments. Where is the controversy?

Indictments began in 2010. The nine people were charged in 2011 for making false statements. Under Bush, the Department of Justice made zero arrests and zero indictments. All the arrests and indictments were made under Obama. Who are the Obama nominees that were involved and how were they involved?

On January 25, 2011, Burke announced the first details of the case to become officially public, marking the end of Operation Fast and Furious. At a news conference in Phoenix, he reported a 53-count indictment of 20 suspects for buying hundreds of guns intended for illegal export between September 2009 and December 2010. Newell, who was at the conference, called Fast and Furious a "phenomenal case," while denying that guns had been deliberately allowed to walk into Mexico.[3][12]
On October 26, 2009, a teleconference was held at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. to discuss U.S. strategy for combating Mexican drug cartels. Participating in the meeting were Deputy Attorney General David W. Ogden, Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer, ATF Director Kenneth E. Melson, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Michele Leonhart, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Robert Mueller and the top federal prosecutors in the Southwestern border states. They decided on a strategy to identify and eliminate entire arms trafficking networks rather than low-level buyers.[3][32][33] Those at the meeting did not suggest using the "gunwalking" tactic, but ATF supervisors would soon use it in an attempt to achieve the desired goals.[34] The effort, beginning in November, would come to be called Operation Fast and Furious for the successful film franchise, because some of the suspects under investigation operated out of an auto repair store and street raced.[3]

The strategy of targeting high-level individuals, which was already ATF policy, would be implemented by Bill Newell, special agent in charge of ATF's Phoenix field division. In order to accomplish it, the office decided to monitor suspicious firearms purchases which federal prosecutors had determined lacked sufficient evidence for prosecution, as laid out in a January 2010 briefing paper. This was said to be allowed under ATF regulations and given legal backing by U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Dennis K. Burke. It was additionally approved and funded by a Justice Department task force.[3] However, long-standing DOJ and ATF policy has required arms shipments to be intercepted.[4][5]

On June 7, 2012, under the threat of being held in contempt of Congress, Attorney General Holder appeared at his seventh Congressional hearing, where he continued to deny knowledge of "gunwalking" by high-level officials. By then, the Justice Department had turned over about 7,000 pages of documents.[78] On June 20, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee voted along party lines to recommend that Holder be held in contempt. At issue were 1,300 pages of documents that had not been turned over to Congress by the DOJ. Earlier that day, President Obama had invoked executive privilege over those documents, marking the first time the privilege has been asserted during his presidency.[79][80]
Which suggests he is hiding something.
