News for the past six months or so has been replete with Obama becoming more and more like the candidate he once was - an unapologetic liberal fighting for serious change, rather than the spineless compromiser of the past three years. Here's the latest example: Obama just gutted Clinton's disastrous welfare reform by removing the work requirement.

In the run up to the election, Obama has been much more comfortable with expanding the powers of the executive branch than he was for most of his presidency. Although I see this as a positive development given how fucked up congress is, I don't think it represents a shift to the left. It just represents him doing things he always wanted to do but didn't do because he was operating under a more constrained idea of what the executive can and cannot do. Whatever he can't do by himself, he needs to get through congress. That necessitated compromise.

Regarding gay marriage, I think he always was in favor of legalizing it, but was unwilling to come out of the closet about that until the poll numbers showed it wouldn't hurt him much.

As far as words are concerned, empathy can go sit on a land mine for all I care. As far as actions on concerned, empathy is an important factor, but by no means should it govern action.

A juxtaposition of a far-right fascist with a person whose political views are at best highly centric leftism. A statement expressing a lack of basic human feeling that another person exists and has other political views. A statement of fact expressing the author's belief that the person described is doing willful harm to one's country; is unreasonably hostile towards another group of human beings; is capable of going against his word to the willful harm of a person who trusts him; war-like; is capable of unjust commands; and is against the idea of "liberty", the definition of which escapes you even more than it escapes me.

This is a sad, pitiably weak diatribe against a flawed but decent human being. I'll never understand such unrelenting, unbearable hatred for people whose only crime is not agreeing with you. For all the weakness in your positions, for all its arrogance and sheer ignorance, I still respect that you have a difference of opinion, and unlike you, I would fight to the death anyone who would seek to take it away from you - as would Obama, I daresay. Keep that in mind while you seethe in rage at the unconscionable act of seeking to help the less fortunate, which is the liberal viewpoint at its very heart.
