Riots break out during massive student protest of 100,000 in Chile

"More than 100,000 students and workers packed La Alameda of Chile, in the capital Santiago demanding free education for all during a cold and rainy day. The protesters walked in front of the Presidential Palace, La Moneda, and the Ministry of Education.
The Confederation of Chilean Students (Confech) accused the police of suppressing the massive march with attacks and tear gas, despite the fact that they had committed [themselves] not to intervene.
The main motto of the chilean students protest is 'In an unequal country we should all fight. Free public education to change society'".

Yeah, the times they are a'changin'...all the time.

One problem is all this focus on "changing society," rather than the classic idea of becomong the change we want to see. I'm guilty of this to some extent myself. Anyway, what are your thoughts?

I wish radical protests would take place in the USA. I think the ruling class here has brainwashed the public so much that people are afraid of engaging in these acts.

Short of watching the video, which I'm not going to do at work, I don't see anything that explains what they're protesting.....What are these 100,000 people protesting?

Equality? If they all already have to pay for education then they are alreay equal. Asking for free stuff has nothing to do with equality. It would be different if say, the Government gave free education only to males, and females were protesting for equal free education but this is not an equality protest. Schools cost money to build, maintain, for teacher's wages, materials, equipment, so who has to pay for it? Everyone would just have to pay anyways including people who choose not to go to school, how is that fair and equal? aperosn pays for something they don't even want or maybe can't get (for instance being denied entry because they have too low of scores or are mentally incapable etc). I see nothing equal about it. It's just more whine baby socialists demanding the nanny momma government provide all their needs and luxuries to them for free. Again "at no cost to you isn't friken free" when are socialists gonna understand this??????

Saving the empovershed by empoverishing their counterparts will empoverish the whole.
