Billy Graham's daughter is a religious bigot

See interview at Billy Graham's Daughter: 'I Would Not Vote for an Atheist'

The daughter of televangelist Rev. Billy Graham says that it's important to discriminate against candidates who are atheists because politicians "should have a fear for almighty God."

... "I would not vote for a man who is an atheist," she declared. "Because I believe you need to have an acknowledgement, a reverence, a fear for almighty God. And I believe that's where wisdom comes from."
Ann Graham Lotz, daughter of Billy Graham, is a religious bigot. A candidate ought to be judged on his or her merits and abilities not whether or not they believe in any particular deity or no deity at all.

Judging a person solely on their religious views--or absence of them--is as bigoted and intolerant as judging them on false and biased, and mean spirited, stereotypical views about gender, sexual orientation, or race.

Would you vote for a Scientologist?

A man said to the universe:
    "Sir, I exist!"
    "However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me
    A sense of obligation."

Depends on the Scientologist. I have voted for Catholics, Jews, and Protestants, but have yet to have the choice of a candidate who is a Scientologist or a Muslim or a Hindu or a Buddhist or an Atheist or someone from many thousands of identifiable groups.

Then I'm afraid we disagree. I would not vote for a Scientologist, because being a member of Scientology speaks directly to one's state of mind. People are free to say similar things regarding atheists.

Hum, isn't there somthing in our constitution about there being no religious test for office? I guess she doesn't care much for that part.

What are we disagreeing on? I agree that people are free to say, generally, whatever they choose, and they are free to be bigots. My submission is that Ann Graham Lotz is a bigot. And, I would defend her right to be one.

Which raises another interesting point (at least to me), while I could see myself voting for a Scientologist. I would find it difficult to vote for a bigot. Seems I'm a bigot when it comes to bigots.

Indeed. Too bad so few are familiar with the founding document and the principles it enshrines.

Are we supposed to be surprised that the daughter of a tel-evangelist thinks religion belongs in politics?
Is there any reason her opinion is particularly important or something?

Not only that, but it seems that you also speculate on the advantages of banning speculation.

This government recognizes a God...for example, one nation under God...in God we trust, ex... Therefore, I believe it is a little bit out of line to refuse to consider voting for an atheist. If that atheist does not respect the religious majority and heritage of this country, then by all means...discriminate away! But if an atheist is respectful of our Christian heritage, then it would be wrong to discriminate against him/her. I will add, of the atheists I have heard speak of Christianity, they are almost never respectful, and almost always derogatory.

It's always a strange feeling when I agree with an atheist but in this case I do. Frankly no one knows who reverences God or not so how can that be the sole or primary reason behind a vote? Hitler, Obama and Bush all claimed to be "Christian" but I'd vote for an honest atheist over those guys right now.

It sounds like she thinks that a persons religious beliefs are part of their "merit", so there is no real disagreement here.
