By ROBERT H. REID

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraqi militants claimed in a Web statement Tuesday to have taken an American soldier hostage and threatened to behead him in 72 hours unless the Americans release Iraqi prisoners. The U.S. military said it was investigating, but the claim's authenticity could not be immediately confirmed.

The posting, on a Web site that frequently carried militants' statements, included a photo of what that statement said was an American soldier, wearing desert fatigues and seated on a concrete floor with his hands tied behind his back. The figure in the photo appeared stiff and expressionless, and the photo's authenticity could not be confirmed.

A gun barrel was pointed at his head, and behind him on the wall is a black banner emblazoned with the Islamic profession of faith, "There is no god but God and Muhammad is His prophet."

A U.S. military spokesman in Baghdad, Marine Sgt. Salju K. Thomas, said he had no information on the claim but "we are currently looking into it."

Ahh, but is it?

Hehe It's funny in a way, that if the terrorist were actually the ones behind it (and not some idiot) and they thought that it would work...

I love the look of TOTAL disinterest on that soldier's face as that rifle is pointed at him. Also, the fact that the rifle is apparently being held by the butt only implies a VERY strong insurgent.

Is that a Hasbro G.I. Joe doll or some knockoff. This would be a good way to drum up some sales for some second rate toy company. :)

I'd buy one just for the hell of it. But then again I bought the Hopkin Green Frog too.

Actually, I find it a bit sick and not at all funny. I like black humor as much as the next guy but we aren't even sure this was meant as a joke. Too many assholes out there to assume that.

i don't doubt it's intended as a serious attempt to convince us they've capture a live soldier.

call me sick but i find it hilarious they think anyone would believe them on that evidence..

heh.. i think it's funny too. in a completely pitiful kind of way. stuff like that makes them look extremely desperate. not sure if that's good or bad, but i'm not concerned about that right now.

How do you know that picture even CAME from the Middle East? The WWW being the double edged sword that it is, that photo sould have been made by your next door neighbor and uploaded to that site.
Does anyone know if anybody bothers to check sources on this site? I rather doubt it myself.

the news article said it was posted on an islamist site.

it obviously was posted by someone affiliated with islamists, altho not necessarily residing in the mid-east. could have been made up in a bedroom in the US.

btw i find it annoying they don't give the links to islamist sites. what info do they include that is unfit for public consumption?

I bought it until I saw the gun. aside from the fact that it is floating in mid air, Ive not seen an M4 with that kind of paint job that covered the whole gun seemlessly.

It looks like the gun in the package. I call that adding insult to injury when the toy terrorists use the doll's own toy gun to threaten him.
