| Volcanic Erupter Posts: 9,491 | War Crimes Redux He wrote that the Geneva Convention was "obsolete". No I am not referring to Alberto Gonzales. I am referring to General-Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel who wrote the opinion regarding the treatment of Russian prisoners. This opinion was noted by U.S. prosecutors at Nuremberg, who cited it as an aggravating circumstance in seeking, and obtaining, the death penalty. Keitel was executed in 1946. "This so-called ill treatment and torture in detention centers, stories of which were spread everywhere among the people, and later by the prisoners who were freed … were not, as some assumed, inflicted methodically, but were excesses committed by individual prison guards, their deputies, and men who laid violent hands on the detainees." Basically, there were just a few "rotten apples" mistreating detainees. This isn't a quote from Donald Rumsfeld who did try to blame prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib, Guantanimo and elsewhere on a few "rotten apples". This was said by Rudolf Hoess, the SS commandant at Auschwitz. In April 1947 Hoess was hanged on the grounds of the camp adjacent to Crematorium I. I am not suggesting that Rumsfeld or Gonzales are the equivalent of either Keitel or Hoess. Rumsfeld and Gonzales are however guilty of war crimes. If American justice means anything at all, I can only hope that they will be brought to justice in the fullness of time.
