The accountability office said the videos "constitute covert propaganda" because the government was not identified as the source of the materials, which were distributed by the Office of National Drug Control Policy. They were broadcast by nearly 300 television stations and reached 22 million households, the office said.

The accountability office was not critical of the content of the video segments from the White House drug office, but found that the format - a made-for-television "story package" - violated the prohibition on using taxpayer money for propaganda. Representative Henry A. Waxman of California, the senior Democrat on the Government Reform Committee, who requested the review, said the use of the mock news segments broke "a fundamental principle of open government."

Does a day go by that The Bush Delinquents arent getting busted for some bullshit or another? Somebody needs to at least bang their heads together. Televise that, that would be a fine use of taxpayer dollars.

His case is the latest and perhaps most striking example of the Bush administration using government funds to market its agenda to the American public under the guise of journalism — and a new black eye for the media following recent scandals that have raised questions about credibility. Williams is the host of a syndicated television show and a frequent guest on CNN, NBC and other media outlets, and writes a syndicated opinion column. His Web site describes him as a "principled voice for conservatives and Christian values in America's public debates" who brings "an independent view with a refreshing twist to the central issues of our day."

In two cases last year, the Government Accountability Office, Congress' nonpartisan investigative arm, declared that departments under Bush had engaged in illegal "covert propaganda." GAO issued a legal opinion criticizing video segments produced by PR firms under contract with the Health and Human Services Department and the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The segments were designed to be inserted into television station newscasts, but did not indicate that the origin of the information was the U.S. government.

You are right. If lying about WMD to justify an illegal war and violating both the Geneva Convention and the Convention on Torture (which became part of the US law once ratified) didn't get him in trouble, King George isn't too likely to be bothered by merely trying to manipulate the US media

Bottom line, the Bush administration used taxpayer dollars to manipulate and to attempt control the message being put out by the press. If that is not illegal, it should be. It it at least offensive to the intent of the Fifth amendment, not that violating the Bill of Rights is something that bothers the Bush administration..
