Also, it has to be understood that their are divisions of islam, similar to the way there are protestants and catholics, and within protestants there are methodists, baptists, presbiterians, and various sects of really strange folks, including Christian Identity types and the Ku Klux Klan. First; there are 5 Pillars of Islam, not 6.
Second; "jihad" is a word meaning "Struggle." NOT "Kill all the Infidels!" In the classical Islamic interpretation, the one followed up until the advent of Wahhabism in the 1880s, "Jihad" was usually interpreted as referring to a Muslim's inner struggle against Shai-tan ( Satan ).
Third: Yes, there are strong currents of ethnocentric nationalism within the Wahhabist version of Islam. However, the Islam of the Iranian Persians is largely devoid of this concept, as is the Islam practiced in the Far East.
Fourth: There is no "pope" in Islam; each cleric preaches basically whatever he likes. I've heard ( and heard of ) Mullahs from here in the US, in Russia, and in Iraq condemning terrorism in the strongest possible terms. One group of Russian Mullahs even issued a death-sentance against Usama bin-Laden 18 months ago.
Fifth: You see, in Islam, it is ABSOLUTELY forbidden to kill noncombatants for ANY REASON. Suicide ( suicide bombers, anyone? ) is also ABSOLUTELY disallowed: according to al-Quar'an, the homocide-bombers are going straight to Hell, as is Usama and all his ilk. It is also forbidden to use coercion of any kind to convert people; "There must be no coercion in religion" said Muhammad.
