Major Assaults on Hold Until After U.S. Vote
Attacks on Iraq's rebel-held cities will be delayed, officials say. But that could make it harder to allow wider, and more legitimate, Iraqi voting in January.
By Mark Mazzetti, Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration plans to delay major assaults on rebel-held cities in Iraq until after U.S. elections in November, say administration officials, mindful that large-scale military offensives could affect the U.S. presidential race.

Although American commanders in Iraq have been buoyed by recent successes in insurgent-held towns such as Samarra and Tall Afar, administration and Pentagon officials say they will not try to retake cities such as Fallouja and Ramadi — where the insurgents' grip is strongest and U.S. military casualties could be the highest — until after Americans vote in what is likely to be an extremely close election.

"When this election's over, you'll see us move very vigorously," said one senior administration official involved in strategic planning, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Once you're past the election, it changes the political ramifications" of a large-scale offensive, the official said. "We're not on hold right now. We're just not as aggressive."

Any delay in pacifying Iraq's most troublesome cities, however, could alter the dynamics of a different election — the one in January, when Iraqis are to elect members of a national assembly. More.....
Um, Im not much of a warrior, but are they supposed to broadcast major military operations. Seems like that would provoke a preemptive attack by the enemy.
I have been saying all along that the most sinister Bush maneuver would be a Reichstag type event to postpone elections. Can you think of any reasons for tipping his hand?
Another thing: Do you look for an escalation in hostilities to be greater or lesser if Bush wins the election?

How many deaths, both GI and civilian Iraqi, will occur in the next few weeks to buy Bush some sort of political advantage? This sort of action merely extends the length of exposure of U.S. troops to hostile fire. If Bush was a real Commander in Chief he'd fight his war without regard to his own personal political consequences. This is truly disgusting.

We have come to a strange paradox in American history, never before have we been confronted with an enemy outside as well as within our country. At this stage it is difficult to determine if it is more important to capture Bin Laden or to concentrate our stuggles towards voting Bush out of office, and to demand a trial so that he also can be brought to justice.

And what makes things a little worse is that Kerry, or even some looser 3rd party canidate, even comes close to comprehending what is happening too America or what must be done to reverse of the madness set into motion.

I wonder if in future history books if the world will view America under Bush the same as we often view Germany under Hitler, four more years of Bush might make it look that bad. Now I know there are a lot of hateful, resentful, greedy, and down right cruel minded people in our country who still support Bush and his para-religious madness, as well as basically good people who have been deceaved into thinking that it is patiotic to support Bush or that it will be doing God a favor by electing him for the office of commander and chief. But such prisoners of that philosophy are forced to wear those bags over their heads so they cannot see what is happening.

This might be your last chance Ameirca to reverse the extremism of the Bush agenda, if Bush wins the election you might as well kiss world security goodbye.
