Obama spreads the word in a land of God and guns - 24 Oct 2008 - NZ Herald: International and World News

Can a gun enthusiast explain the reasoning behind "The military call this an M16 assault rifle, but round here we call it a sporting firearm,"

What is sporting about an m16? Do you really need that much fire power to take out a squirrel? I don't know what you feed your wildlife on but around my area even a slug gun can deal with a rabbit.

and as well the comment , The weapon, he says, lies at the heart of the 2008 presidential election.

Really? why?
Actually very few people have actual M16s. An M16 is the full auto version of the AR-15. Most people that own semi-auto .223 rifles actually have AR's, not M16s. What is sporty about an AR? Well they're quite fun to shoot and are precise machines. While I certainly do not think a particular gun or even gun control in general I do think it is quite an important issue. But neither major party candidate has an ideal record on this issue.

Say no to superstition and BS, science forever.

First of America is bigger than the majority of the other countries out there which automatically gives us a higher poplulation and therefore the amount of crimes will be higher since we have more people.
Per Capita, ironeagle... PER CAPITA. If you don't know what that means, look it up. After all, you're on the Internet.

Sonart: I think it's too bad you have such a negative and fogged view of Americans becuase if you could come here and stay a week with us you 'd see us regular people ar pretty nice to be around. We do normal stuff just like you, except that we get real protective when a criminal tries to break into our homes, so we point a gun and shot to kill if we have to. It saves us court costs, and the money it costs to house criminals who pray on families.
How sweet... that's absolutely charming, ironeagle. And I'm sure that most Americans are simply wonderful, honest, hard working folks just like you and me.

But that doesn't change for one moment the FACT that Americans are among the most violent and murderous in the whole world.

PER CAPITA Gun Deaths among the 36 Wealthiest natins. The U.S. is number ONE.

Here's another... PER CAPITA murder rates. U.S. is number 5 out of 83. But by golly, we're behind Columbia.

PER CAPITA firearm homicide rates. Ahh, much better... the U.S. is number 8 .

Percentage PER CAPITA homicides with firearms. The U.S. is number 7.

I love my country, ironeagle, and I'm proud of much that we've accomplished. But pride still needs to be earned, and being one of the most gun violent, murderous nations on earth isn't something I'm partiularly proud of.

Are you?

Do you not understand the difference between correlation and causation? It has been explained umpteen times.

And how many times do you have to be told that correlation does not DENY causation? If you can show conditions under which coorelation does not apply, fine... otherwise, there's no reason not to accept causation.

sigh... Logically speaking, causation cannot be assumed. You need evidence of causation.

But since you asked:

The UK has the highest crime rate per capita despite more liberal drug laws and an essentially total ban on guns. The crime rate has risen during the period of the ban.

Therefore, banning of guns does not cause lower crime.

Quot errat demonstrandum.
