What they have done is succeed as mainstream Americans, reviving the idea that you look at the persons character, not his/her color. All the civil rights leaders in the world can't budge the broader community without the kind of leadership provided by Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice. In the early days of the civil rights movement and even before, the success of individuals like Joe Louis and Jackie Robinson, Paul Robeson and Fats Waller were inspiration of hope for black people. There is no reason to criticize these people for not specifically having careers in civil rights or for not speaking out on "black issues".
