Federal investigators concluded that Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) divulged classified intercepted messages to the media when he was on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, according to sources familiar with the probe. Specifically, Fox News chief political correspondent Carl Cameron confirmed to FBI investigators that Shelby verbally divulged the information to him during a June 19, 2002, interview, minutes after Shelby's committee had been given the information in a classified briefing, according to the sources, who declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the case. Cameron did not air the material. Moments after Shelby spoke with Cameron, he met with CNN reporter Dana Bash, and about half an hour after that, CNN broadcast the material, the sources said. Senator Shelby should be tossed in prison for this act of idiocy. This self important asshat, showing how important he is, leaked information and that is wrong. He should be punished as harshly as the law allows.

Yes, I agree, examples need to be made. Confidential information does get leaked by the congress on a fairly regular basis. Our leaders need to have access to all kinds of information to make the decisions they need to make.

Part of the problem is that this administration has gone way overboard in classifying material as secret. Some people claim that this is the most secretive administration we have ever had. No need for accountability concerns if you can keep the people from finding out about any of your screwups!

Valerie Plame was doing ANTITERROR work for the CIA. I think the PATRIOT Act takes in this kind of stuff.

Two government officials have told the FBI that conservative columnist Robert Novak was asked specifically not to publish the name of undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame in his now-famous July 14 newspaper column. The two officials told investigators they warned Novak that by naming Plame he might potentially jeopardize her ability to engage in covert work, stymie ongoing intelligence operations, and jeopardize sensitive overseas sources. These new accounts, provided by a current and former administration official close to the situation, directly contradict public statements made by Novak. He has downplayed his own knowledge about the potential harm to Plame and ongoing intelligence operations by making that disclosure. He has also claimed in various public statements that intelligence officials falsely led him to believe that Plame was only an analyst, and the only potential consequences of her exposure as a CIA officer would be that she might be inconvenienced in her foreign travels. The two administration officials questioned by the FBI characterized Novak's statements as untrue and misleading, according to a government official and an attorney official familiar with the FBI interviews.

Novak? He was THE source for saying that Valerie Plame is CIA. The allegation is that the Bush/PNAC crowd outed her as a warning to Joe Wilson, her husband, to don't be so uppity. That is the specific effect, but the general effect is to make everyone who would have independent views cautious about public expression of antiAdministration material. "Toe the line or else we will f you up!"

No doubt that Wilson was aware of the possible effects of his actions, he's no rookie in this business. Bite the hand that feeds you and you'll suffer the consequences.

I think he wasn't figuring on an attack on his wife. If proved, a treason charge could be brought against the perps. I think Wilson is fed up with Bush/PNAC and didn't care if they attacked him. Action against Ms Plame, an ANTITERROR agent, wasn't on his radar screen.
