In the thread on Georgia, the following post was made. Obviously my post would drag the discussion off topic, so I shall post it here.

England invaded Wales, and made us part of England. For the greater good, apparently. Most of us resent their rule, and would be happy if, say, Scotland were to declare war on England for our freedom. I wonder if people would make such a fuss about it then? It's not the big bad Communist Wolf coming for the innocent capitalists there, isn't it?
(I am aware that Russia ain't Communist anymore.) |
That isn't actually true. Any of it. The English conquest of Wales was the result of Dafydd ap Gruffydd's rather foolish decision to attack Hawarden Castle, and start the final war between Norman England and Wales; the war which led to the loss of Welsh independence. It was not simply the case that Edward I chose to invade Wales simply out of some form of imperialistic ambition.
The actual Act of Union with England, came after a lengthy period of requests from the Welsh to be joined in union with England, and only occured when, in the eyes of the Welsh bards, the 'Son of Prophesy' had become ruler of England and Wales. The Son of Prophesy was of course Henry VII, whose ancestors had captured Conwy Castle in the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr.
Of course after that Wales remained, until the 19th century, a bastion of British unionism and monachism, supporting the Crown during the civil war.
And the vast majority of those in Wales do not 'resent' English rule, hense the reason why English parties, without any nationalistic tendencies or promises to break the union, get the vast majority of the vote.
