Italy must be broken up, says Berlusconi's wife

Italy must be broken up, says Berlusconi's wife - Telegraph

Silvio Berlusconi's wife added her voice yesterday to the growing calls for Italy to be partitioned.

In an interview with La Stampa, Veronica Lario, 51, said: "Italy has never been well-suited to being a single country, and has never matured enough to become one. There is no longer any value in a unified Italy."
Is this the strength of the EU?

Bounderies enacted years ago and imposed on parts of some countries can be confidently questioned because of economic strength and confidence in human rights enacted through the European Union.

I'm sure regions with strong national or regional identaties will watch changes in Italy with great interest. Whilst it would be good if the major players realise the strengths of regionality and identity

*shrugs* Italy has only been a united kingdom since 1870. Or thereabouts. And there has always been a huge divide economically & socially between north & south, which hasn't altered significantly whilst the country has been unified. Plus Berlusconi is pandering to the Northern League, who he's in coalition with, I believe.

    Other coutries, not so much.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

Barking up the wrong tree there Arawn.
No reason why the various parts of a broken up Italy couldn't belong to the EU.

You're just engaging in anti-EU rant. You should really try to find something relevant to say.

Nono sorry not an anti- EU stance, wholeheartedly agree. Any national or states as peaceful regions within the EU borders can and should be encouraged to explore their individuality

Doesn't the region of Milan seek autonomy?

The strongest economic region inside Italy, seems like some of those with power there would rather be a more independent entity, able to reap the reward of their economy without having to provide much back to the rest of Italy.

Well, taxpayers in New York and California, say, subsidize Mississippi. That's the way it goes.
Southern Italy has always been way poorer than the north.

But there's more to it than wealth. If northern Italy is "Italian", southern Italy is Italian with knobs on: absolute corruption, clan mentality, ubiquitous mafia -- you name it.
So northerners feel endlessly superior to southerners.
