The military said that Israeli Defence Forces soldiers operate according to "a strict set of moral guidelines" and that their expected adherence to them only "increases wherever and whenever IDF soldiers come in contact with civilians". It added that "if evidence supporting the allegations is uncovered, steps are taken to hold those involved to the level of highest judicial severity". It also said: "The Military Advocate General has issued a number of indictments against soldiers due to allegations of criminal behaviour ... Soldiers found guilty were punished severely by the Military Court, in proportion to the committed offence." It had not by last night quantified such indictments.

Time for the UN to replace those who are fille with hate?

The dark-haired 22-year-old in black T-shirt, blue jeans and red Crocs is understandably hesitant as he sits at a picnic table in the incongruous setting of a beauty spot somewhere in Israel. We know his name and if we used it he would face a criminal investigation and a probable prison sentence. The birds are singing as he describes in detail some of what he did and saw others do as an enlisted soldier in Hebron. And they are certainly criminal: the incidents in which Palestinian vehicles are stopped for no good reason, the windows smashed and the occupants beaten up for talking back – for saying, for example, they are on the way to hospital; the theft of tobacco from a Palestinian shopkeeper who is then beaten "to a pulp" when he complains; the throwing of stun grenades through the windows of mosques as people prayed. And worse. The young man left the army only at the end of last year, and his decision to speak is part of a concerted effort to expose the moral price paid by young Israeli conscripts in what is probably the most problematic posting there is in the occupied territories. Not least because Hebron is the only Palestinian city whose centre is directly controlled by the military, 24/7, to protect the notably hardline Jewish settlers there. (...)

Jeez, if similar things were done to Israeli civilians, it would be all over the Western media, especially in the US.

But what's described above is simply routine and (for some reason, eh?) hardly ever makes the papers.

Missiles are fired at israeli civilians, I think they'd prefer some flash bangs. I'd imagine it never makes the papers because it is routine, and soldiers everywhere beat up civilians every day. This of course doesn't excuse it, but I don't really expect soldiers to ever be well behaved towards people who, to them, threaten their families dailyand have done so for a half century.

Read my post again, you'll find a conveniently placed "to them", which sort of changes the tone of my opinion. Reality has little to do with what motivates people's actions, perception does, and to Israeli soldiers (this is all imagined, I haven't made much of an aquaitance with many) Palestineans are the people who have harbored terrorists who threatened their families (and terrorists certainly have). Israels' first mistake was attempting to occupy its new possessions acquired in the Israeli-Arab wars (then again, it might not have made a huge difference, but it would be nice to see). People have no problem ignoring when the problems they face are due to their own mistakes of the past. Example, Years of muddling by U.S. in the Middle east leads to terrorist groups among others whose basic tenet is anti-americanism.

Some would say you made an oversimplification of human motivation, but it's fairly accurate.

People perceive that they must do certain things to survive (or refrain from doing them), and many false perceptions have to be cultivated for most to act in a totally crazy way. In the Israeli-Palestinian-etc. conflict, all sides are in the same realm of
discussion. They all propose "we" become terrorists
in return.

Can you people for once try to understand and realize the bias that lies within you?? i honestly beg you... it's disturbing that some people have so little self-awareness of their own thought processes and outlooks on life.
