Should Jimmy Carter be talking to so called terrorist groups ? Who were once the elected government of the West Bank but driven out under pressure from Israel ?

Is there any chance that people will ever give peace a chance?

Carter, Hamas discussed Gaza truce at Egypt meeting - Middle East Times
The peace in the Middle-East is an extremely needed political enterprise.
If Hamas is for peace, then we should talk to those guys. Once Hamas opts for that political solution, Hamas should never step aside. Therefore, we need to monitor Hamas' political approach very closely.

J. Carter served as a political plummet. He did his part well.
Now, some guys condamn J.Carter ? That is piteous.

Your losing the point! I doubt Hamas will ever be fully committed to peace; however, they are the Palestinian group with the real power. The only thing keeping them from taking the West Bank is Israel. That said, a peace negotiation can only be made with the ones in power and like it or that's Hamas. For Hamas that bad that Hamas is, they don't seem nearly as corrupt as the Arafat regime.

However, they should renounce terrorism, but I agree if I were them I wouldn't get rid of my guns.

Maybe so, but it will not change the fact that Carter was one of the most ineffective and worst Presidents in US. I know peopl won't believe it, but he rivaled Bush! All the housing market is the worst in X years are dating being dated back to his Presidency.

Leader of Hamas has said that Hamas will never recognise the right of Israel to exist, but that a ceasefire is in everybody's interest. Sounds like they are on their knees and need time to reorganise.

Read between the lines. They also said that they would accept a Palestinian State next to Israel.

What is the harm of talking to Hamas? Giving them legitimacy? Please, they already have legitimacy amongst the Palestinian people and much the Arab and Muslim people. If peace will be brokered then it must be with Hamas. Israel doesn't have to accept anything, but the silent treatment only insures more violence.

The best way to pacify an enemy is direct talks!

But Islam is a moderate peaceful religion, surely your not suggesting the mightiest nation in the history of the world, bow to terrorist threats from an extreme fundamentalist minority?

If anything not talking to them gives them legitimacy, it just gives them yet another "victim" card to play in the whole mess. In my opinion though Carter is not the man who should be talking to them. Israel should be talking to them directly, not through the US or the EU or whoever. Israeli politicians though garner too much support from the more extreme elements in Israel, in particular the religious settlement movement, most of whom believe that Israel should stretch from the Red sea and the Med to the Euphrates. Couple that with the lot in the strip and west bank who want to drive the Jews into the sea I don't hold out much hope. But all we can do is try I suppose.

I couldn't agree more. I what I was saying that Carter was right on, was directly engaging Hamas!

Disengagment of Gaza is proof that its not over-welming. I believe most Israelis know that a Palestinian State is inevitable.

They are the minority.

True, but I think most Palestinians have a stronger desire for the simple life. I am sure most Serbians want to drive all the Kosovian into the ground or at the very least retake Kosovo, but amazingly they have not done anything since Kosovo declared independence.

Hamas has no option left, but to accept and follow conditions for creating Palestine as a state.

#2
We all know Carter's achievements as the U.S. President.
