Succesful occupations?

Inspired by the responses on the Bush Doctrine and Neo-con Rhetoric

How many historical occupations where only one nation was imposing force on a foreign country that resisted turned out to be successful?

Well....not sure exactly what you're looking for...but...

For 400 years, Rome brought a unity and order to Britain that it had never had before. Prior to the Romans, Britain was a disparate set of peoples with no sense of national identity beyond that of their local tribe. In the wake of the Roman occupation, every 'Briton' was aware of their 'Britishness'. This defined them as something different from those people who came after them, colouring their national mythology, so that the Welsh could see themselves as the true heirs of Britain, whilst the Scots and Irish were proud of the fact that they had never been conquered by Rome.
BBC - History - An Overview of Roman Britain
Sounds like Rome occupied Britian for 400 years....almost 100 times longer than we've been in Iraq.

*nods* At the cost of 4 legions garrisoning it...a tenth of the Roman military power.

There's the various colonial empires set up from 1500 onwards....there's Spain itself, and Russia...there's Great Britain (ie the English occupation of Scotland, Wales, and until comparatively recently, Ireland).

There are hundreds, if not thousands of examples....

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

America has done fairly well with the country we took from its native inhabitants.

Western Allied occupation of Germany (i.e. the British, French and US zones that eventually became the Federal Republic of Germany) are a thorough-going success story. Just look at Germany today.

It depends on what we mean by "success." If the mere prolonged existence of an occupation makes it a success story, then by all means there are many examples.

(1) The native Hawaiians resisted in the beginning and lost!
(2) There was a farce vote to make Hawaii a state, by having mostly white American colonizers vote in the election
(3) The Hawaiian separatist movement gets very little steam, even thought there are still many and an identifiable native Hawaiian population
(4) The US has had a very peaceful rule over Hawaii
(5) More non-native Hawaiians citizens make up Hawaii
(6) The majority of the Native Hawaiian population has seemed to accept their fate
(7) They have been colonized peaceful for nearly 1/2 a century and there seems no foreseeable change ending it.

History of Hawaii
Quote:
Hawaii is one of three U.S. States that were independent nations prior to joining the United States - Vermont Republic, 1791; or being annexed by it - Republic of Texas, 1845; and Hawai`i. Hawai`i was the only one of these with formal international diplomatic recognition.[8] The Kingdom of Hawaii existed from 1810 until 1893 when the monarchy was overthrown. It was an independent republic from 1894 until 1898. It was annexed by the United States in 1898, became a territory in 1900, and has been a state since 1959

Plenty of them. Roman Empire, Hungary as a nation emerged as a result of success occupation by Bulgarian tribes from the Kama River region, Russian Empire grew up as a result of very successful occupations, William the Conqueror occupied England very successfully.

Sometimes invaders become the invaded. However, I'd add the caveat that people merely looking for work aren't necessarily an occupying force.

For bucks Mexicans are willing to become gringos. Why not to take Mexico like a few more states in the Union? It would boost the economy on both sides and remove illegal immigration problem.
