Interesting read. But then again, I doubt anyone in this particular thread is going to agree with it, and not because of its merits or lack thereof, either...

Oh, it's really too bad, isn't it?

That may happen. Unfortunately, I believe any trial at all will not be the trial we expect. This guy didn't just pop out of the woodwork, and he has a past that a lot of people here won't want to see made public. Saddam has a history with us, and most of it not good. If a lot of "testimony" comes out with damning evidence of any dirty American deals, it will be not good for us, either domestically or in the world arena.

I think Saddam will conveniently die, or the trial will be held with a news blackout for vague "security" reasons or will be held behind closed doors altogether. The other, less likely option will be Bush might allow the chips to fall where they may and claim innocence as most of Saddam's history lies with previous presidents. Of course, this angle may cause a lot of damage to the presidencies of Reagan and Bush1 (as well as Clinton, but I don't think that will be a concern to Bush).

And of course one for the conspiracy theorists: One of Saddam's famous lookalikes will stand trial and be executed, while the REAL Saddam lounges on a beach in Bimini, fat, comfortable and well paid with all his secrets "safe".

(edit for typo)

Personally, I vote for one of the first 3 options.

Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots.

Well seeing how the UN hasn't even got halfway with MIlosevic's trial, I somehow doubt if the UN trialled Saddam, I will be long buried before I get the chance to see him in jaik.

Ideological loyalty is the act of giving your soul to a vague concept, to be manipulated by people smarter than you.

what do you think has been going on with him since he was captured?
I think they're trying to get him to talk and he's trying to figure out how to hook up with his old Tikrit and Ba'ath buddies so we're wary of letting him have a public forum to remind current Iraqi government officials that he's got the goods on them and that he's got huge sums squirrelled away for anyone who helps as well as reminding those who benefit that he knows how to put them in the plush seats of power. He did after all remain President with 100% of the electoral vote  after the entire world fell on his head and put his country in the crapper. I don't know how, but he manages to slither out of all tight spots. I'm just surprised that the IRC chose to make a statement on this rather than the other 100 million issues that could have used the publicity.
