Bin Laden alive in Pakistan: US spy chief
Updated at 2115 PST
WASHINGTON: Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden is alive and sheltering in lawless parts of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan, US intelligence chief Mike McConnell said Sunday.

McConnell blamed the Pakistani government of President Pervez Musharraf for allowing Al-Qaeda to regroup through a controversial peace pact last year with tribal leaders in the border areas. But Musharraf remains a key ally, he said.

"My personal view is that he's alive," the director of national intelligence said on a US television when asked about bin Laden. "I believe he is in the tribal region of Pakistan."

A new report by the last week said that Al-Qaeda had regrouped in its Pakistani "safe haven" and was determined to inflict mass casualties through new attacks on the United States.

McConnell said that had been possible owing to a September peace accord between the Pakistani government and pro-Taliban tribal leaders in the ill-governed region bordering Afghanistan.

A week ago, the tribal militants tore up the pact, stoking tensions as deadly violence erupted across Pakistan following the military's crushing of a pro-Taliban uprising at the Red Mosque in Islamabad.

Are you claiming to know the whereabouts of bin Laden?

This report makes it clear that his whereabouts are far from well-known:

Quote:
AL-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden is alive and sheltering in lawless parts of Pakistan on the border with Afghanistan, US intelligence chief Mike McConnell said yesterday.

Mr McConnell blamed President Pervez Musharraf's government for allowing al-Qaeda to regroup via a peace pact last year with tribal leaders in the border areas.

But General Musharraf remained a key ally of the US, he said.

The administration's latest remarks, following the White House's refusal to rule out military attacks on militants inside Pakistan, sparked a curt response from Islamabad.

"Our stance is that Osama bin Laden is not present in Pakistan,'' Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said from the Pakistani capital.

"If anyone has the information he should give it to us, so that we can apprehend him.''

Asked about bin Laden, the US director of national intelligence told NBC television: "My personal view is that he's alive. I believe he is in the tribal region of Pakistan.''

A new report by the US intelligence community last week said al-Qaeda had regrouped in its Pakistani "safe haven'' and was determined to inflict mass casualties through new attacks on the United States.

Mr McConnell said that had been possible owing to a September peace accord between the Pakistani government and pro-Taliban tribal leaders in the ill-governed region bordering Afghanistan.

A week ago, the tribal militants tore up the pact, stoking tensions as deadly violence erupted across Pakistan following the military's crushing of a pro-Taliban uprising at the Red Mosque in Islamabad.

"Instead of pushing al-Qaeda out, they made a safe haven for training and recruiting. al-Qaeda's been able to regain some of its momentum,'' Mr McConnell said.

Nearly six years on from the September 11 attacks of 2001, al-Qaeda remained intent on inserting operatives inside the United States, he said, although there was no evidence of the existence of a "sleeper cell".

Mr McConnell said if Gen Musharraf was forced from power by the Islamist violence and pro-democracy unrest sweeping Pakistan, that could have a "severe impact'' on the US struggle against terrorism.

"But President Musharraf is one of our valued allies. He is a moderate,'' he said, and "probably the majority of (Al-Qaeda's) senior leadership'' had been killed or captured thanks to Pakistani action.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri told CNN that instead of intelligence estimates, the United States should give Islamabad "evidence, actionable intelligence'' on the al-Qaeda presence inside Pakistan.

"Let the United States provide us with actionable intelligence, and you will find that Pakistan will never be lacking, despite all the sacrifices that Pakistan has been making.''

I have seen zero eveidence that shows where Osama Bin Laden is. So my opinion is as valid as anybodies. Anybody who thinks Osama Bin Laden is in some cave sonewhere is a total idiot. My guess is Osama Bin Laden is in some luxurious enviroment with 4 of his many wives living the good life and just laughing at stupid Americans.

Bin Laden's kidney problems have been the subject of intense speculation. Some watchers claim he is dependent on dialysis; others say this is nonsense. Last September a French regional paper, L'Est Republicain, quoting a French intelligence report picked up at a cocktail party in Pakistan, claimed he had died of typhoid in the tribal belt.

It depends.......

If Osama Bin Laden is still under CIA payroll like he was in the 80s, then he can live safely just about anywhere in the world; be it Lahore or California. USA would provide all sorts of protection for him.

Not too long ago there was a televised interview with the leadership of Pakistan.

They made it perfectly clear that they didn't know exactly where OBL was located, but they knew he was on Pakistan soil.

They also stated that the shit would hit the fan if the U.S. crossed into Pakistan to get him.

It is known where he is, and he is in a country that told us to fack off.

IT'S A BOY!!

So your assumption, which is based on less information than someone believing he is in Pakistan tribal area is not idiotic? LOL, please enlighten us why that is!

Man some of you will believe anything.

However I do believe this, the Afgans hate him because of the brutality of the Taliban, but the Pakistanis love him, because they are mostly an Islamist ideological country!
Quote:
Most Afghans have little time for the man who sparked an invasion of their country in 2001. Nine out of 10 people view him negatively, according to a recent poll. But elsewhere in the Muslim world he is a man to be greatly admired.

"Osama is a hero," said Kamran Ali, a 23-year-old call centre operator in Islamabad. "Americans have done many bad things against Muslims. Osama stands up to them." Like many Pakistanis he discounted suggestions that Bin Laden was linked to the World Trade Centre attacks. "There's no proof of that," he said.

LOL, again watching too much state run Iranian news. With that same logic, Sadam is still on the US payroll fighting the Iranians.

The funny think is we worry so much about Iran, yet Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are really far greater threats to America!

Agreed.

Saudi Arabia basically kicked us out and Pakistan stood with its arms crossed in front of its nukes and shook its head at us.

I don't think they are going to be a threat to us, but it sure sucks not having their cooperation.

Then I guess the US should have gone after him like they should have in the begining.

And there is plenty of talk now that the US may indeed plan on sending forces to Pakistan to deal with Taliban in the tribal areas.... and of course Pakistans president was quoted in saying that would be irresponsible and reckless.......

And didn't I say in a thread not just last week that there was a good chance of the US invading Pakistan, regardless that they are an ally?

I'm getting tired of being right all the time and nobody believing me..... oh well.... not my loss.... I'll just sit back and watch all the idiots in power blow the planet up with their monkey mentality.

Although Pakistan has said it won't allow U.S. troops to operate within its territory, "we would take the action necessary to bring him to justice." ~ Bush

But Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, told reporters Wednesday at the United Nations that his government would oppose any U.S. action in its territory.

"We wouldn't like to allow that at all. We will do it ourselves," he said.

Historically Osama Bin Laden travels with a cast of about 100. Four of them are four of his many wives. That seems like one Hell of a cave. If you study Islam you would know why Osama Bin Laden needs to circulate pictures of him sleeping in caves, walking in desolate mountains and having 4 wives with him. But I do not have time to teach you the edicts of Islam. It looks like my assumptions are based on a vast more dependable stock of knowlege than what I see as no knowledgs at all except gossip. Remember that Osama Bin Laden has a private production company, Osama Bin Laden makes more videos than Michael Moore. Another difficult thing to do in a cave.

Firstly, I don't live in Iran. Secondly, Saddam (former President) and Laden (a terrorist) are not the same. You started off poorly by using the same logic for two different people.

You talked about the US bank-rolling Bin Laden against the Soviets. I talked about the US bank-rolling Sadam against Iran. You mentioned that the CIA were still bank-rolling Bin Laden, I responded with an analogy that showed how foolish that idea was!

depends if Bush gets his way, he already said he is planning his options on getting at the Taliban there.... in his recent history, what does that tell you?

2) What if the Pakistan does not produce Osama Bin Laden?
What if Afghanistan doesn't produce Osama Bin Laden?
What if Iraq doesn't produce Weapons of Mass Distruction?

You guys must get something right eventually.

I never mentioned anything about assumptions.... I'm right, think about it for a second and put the pieces together.... it's common sense.

Logically, if Bush has nothing stopping him, and as he said himself that if he received good intelligence on Osama's location, "we would take the action necessary to bring him to justice." What does that tell you?

I said if USA is still funding Laden, I didn't say I'm absolutely sure that is happening.
