The Myth of Reagan's "Enormous Popularity"

By Michael Benhoff

Reagan left office bolstered by the oft-repeated media myth that he had been far and away the most popular of any president since World War II. But bearing in mind Mark Twain's observation that a lie gets half-way around the world before truth puts its boots on, the US public deserves to know what the polling data actually says.

the article focuses entirely on poll numbers.. poll numbers change like the weather in new england.

one poll number that matters most is at the voting booth. reagan won 49 out of 50 states. doesn't seem like his popularity was much of a myth at all.

people liked him so much, that they chose to continue republican rule when they elected bush sr...

That's ridiculous. Using the number of states won is bad 'logic'. You could, perhaps, use the number of votes won as a percentage of the voting age public, but that wouldn't give you the result you are looking for.

Read the first sentence of the article again.

I don't agree with Republican rule line, but the rest sums it up.. Reagan was sucha dolt he tricked 49 out of 50 states to vote for him.. damn the stupid people... :)
