discontent over iraq and democratic-led congress increasing

WP: Discontent over Iraq increasing, poll finds - washingtonpost.com Highlights - MSNBC.com

Quote:
Almost six in 10 Americans said they do not think the additional troops sent to Iraq since the beginning of the year will help restore civil order there, and 53 percent -- a new high in Post-ABC News polls -- said they do not believe that the war has contributed to the long-term security of the United States.

Disapproval of Bush's performance in office remains high, but the poll highlighted growing disapproval of the new Democratic majority in Congress. Just 39 percent said they approve of the job Congress is doing, down from 44 percent in April, when the new Congress was about 100 days into its term. More significant, approval of congressional Democrats dropped 10 percentage points over that same period, from 54 percent to 44 percent.

Much of that drop was fueled by lower approval ratings of the Democrats in Congress among strong opponents of the war, independents and liberal Democrats. While independents were evenly split on the Democrats in Congress in April (49 percent approved, 48 percent disapproved), now 37 percent said they approved, 54 percent disapproved. And among liberal Democrats, approval of congressional Democrats dropped 18 points.

<snip>

Deep public skepticism about Iraq, concerns about the Democrats and Bush, and near-record-high gasoline prices appear to have combined to sour the overall mood in the country. In the new poll, 73 percent of Americans said the country is pretty seriously on the wrong track, while 25 percent said things are going in the right direction.

all of this is a product of the horrible lack of leadership that the political establishment has served the nation. an incompetent president, first supported by the rubber-stamp republican-led congress.. now, there's the same incompetent president, being supported by the spineless democratic-led congress (that just handed him another check for "stay the course").

i wonder if there is a candidate out there who can actually inspire some hope in the nation..... someone who offers true change, assuming that the public actually wants true change......

hope for america...

Indeed, I think it could be.

If only there were some way his message could be heard by the masses.

The "spinelss" Democrats are showing their true colors, and falling right into line with the other "representatives" that always end up representing something other that the people they were elected to represent.

How older generations have come to support this scam, or fail to speak out against it makes my head spin.

I think you've summed it up pretty well.

Sure there is. Ron Paul can do everything you've mentioned except get elected. The two major parties have a lock on elections in this country, they're not about to let that get away from them. Rule changes, gerrymandering, outright voter fraud, whatever it takes, power will stay where it has traditionally been.

If it must be a Democrat or a Republican, I'd back Joe Biden.

You wouldn't back Ron Paul, Scribbler? I'm surprised, honestly.

I'm surprised too, to be honest. But after a lot of thought I figure Biden would be the best of the bunch. Ron Paul is a Republican but he still sounds like a Libertarian. The problem with that is the GOP wouldn't follow him because what he believes in would be against their best interests. And, like the L.P. itself, any radical positions Paul would take would fail because the idiot sheep don't do radical. I really see no difference if he would be elected from either party at this point, as he would get no support.
Biden is less radical (comparatively) and just as smart. He's also fairly consistent and if you know him you see his positions are not that different now than they were years ago. You can't say that about most of these chameleons who are spending most of their time denying things they stood for only a year ago.
He's also had a plan for Iraq going back two years and he is considered by everyone an expert on foreign policy, which would be a big difference from the idiot in the WH right now.
All things considered, I have to back the one I think would do the most good in a time when ANY good would be a welcome change.
