Sudan lets the UN troops in

As I predicted. It's all thanks to China, Steven Spielberg, and Mia Farrow.

Story.
Quote:
Sudan said it had dropped its objections to large-scale assistance from the United Nations to the overwhelmed African Union peacekeeping force in the Sudan region of Darfur, setting the stage for the possible assignment there of UN peacekeepers.

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan has repeatedly rebuffed UN requests and pressure from governments elsewhere in Africa and around the world to permit international intervention in Darfur, saying such action would violate his country's sovereignty.

But on Monday, Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamad, the Sudanese ambassador to the UN, sent a letter to the UN secretary general, Ban Ki Moon, and the 15 member states of the Security Council saying that Sudan would accept what is known as the "heavy support package" and that it hoped that it would "proceed expeditiously."

The package calls for sending 3,000 well-equipped military police officers along with six attack helicopters and other aviation and logistics support to Darfur. The steps are the second stage of a much-delayed three-stage proposal whose ultimate aim is to create a 21,000-member joint African Union-UN force to replace the 7,000-member African Union force there now.
The question is - who'll provide the troops? Can't imagine Bush would be willing, considering the current state of the US military and the unpleasant memories of Somalia.

Why the silence? No response to this? Not relief that a country where 200,000 people have been killed in a few years of violence may finally have some security? Not praise for the Chinese being behind the move, or criticism that they help out for so long?

Guess people only care about war when it's white people getting killed, or US taxpayers paying for it.
