Well if it is so damned obvious why use the term 'probably', then? Who reported that there was no enemy fire, the same idiot who said 'probably'?
You seem to be arguing over points in an article you seem not to have bothered to read, or if so "probably" paid little attention to.

The simple facts are that immediately after Tillman died the Army created the story of a major Taliban firefight and awarded him a posthumous Silver Star. Their first choice was to lie and cover up. Standard procedure.

In previous wars a soldier was sent to the home of his fallen commrade to inform his loved ones of his passing. This is was the most noble way to handle this.

Now we have Geraldo Rivera and fuckwits of his ilk perusing amoung battle lines, reporting their spin on the matter and the parents get to learn about it first hand though some jackasses words of political bent to get him the "scoop" and send his message of apathy back to the homeland. The same jackass who could care shit one about that fallen soldier. You're right, they lied, I think the reporters should stay the fuck out of the war and let the military leave it's current SOP of lying and allowing lying self serving reporters in the thick of matters to stab our military in the back and go back to SOP #1...fighting a war and leaving the blood and gore out of politics and hackrags so tinfoil hat nimwits won't get all a dither with their imagination and hate propaganda for their own country.

My understanding is a little different. I though the company CO sent the family a personal letter, at least back in the WW2 era. I think the visit nowadays comes from soldiers stateside who are not necessarily familiar with the fallen soldier. They might have a little grief training too but I'm not sure.
It makes sense when you consider the fact that a killed soldier's comrade is still THERE in the battlefield and not available to visit the family.
That would be a better way to do it I think . Someone breaking the news who actually KNEW the guy.

IN WW2 it was done by telegram in the US and Canada and probably most other countries. Kinda impersonal, eh? So telegrams were greatly feared. Perhaps a letter from the CO followed eventually, perhaps not.

Now, as in the Vietnam era, the news is delivered in the US in person by military personnel. (So I guess the sight of an olive drab car pulling up outside is also greatly feared.) There was an article about this in The New Yorker last summer. They recite a scripted message and have explicit orders to keep it brief and impersonal, and to definitely avoid anything resembling a human response to expressions of grief. Sounds like a great assignment.

From what I am to understand from talking to relatives who knew, it wasn't unheard of to see a man in uniform climb out of a cab, not any official vehicle. But I suppose every case was different in its own way.

That is your opinion, of course, which doesn't mean shit to a tree as far his family is concerned or himself as a person...unless you know something you would like to share with us on the matter. Where I sit, he was fighting evil, you are obviously content being an apologist for terrorists.

This is the sort of post that suggests that you never read the links which suggest exactly what the Tillman family feel (betrayed and lied to) and that like so many others you feel perfectly free to call others traitors when they speak difficult truths. Squawks from just another chicken hawk.

I see one link on this whole thead that I have not read because I don't want to register to the newspaper on the end of the link before being able to read the article. Is that the one which tells that the Tillman family feels he was fighting evil"? I never said one thing suggesting they didn't feel betrayed for being lied to. You made an assertion that he was fighting evil, which is entirely a different thing altogether, Ricky. I don't call anyone a traitor here, that is your insertion added to a baseless claim as usual from a run of the mill clucking chicken lefty. Make no mistake I know what a traitor is, I have no difficulty knowing one when I see it,if that shoe fits so be it, if it doesn't one should ask themself why they think it applies to them.

Just for the record, OD, I am a libertartarian, not that you have any particular understanding of the term. Then again I've seen no logic in your reality, so it is all reasonably consistent.

Guys, can we ratchet back the personal attacks already. It's getting out of hand and doesn't show any sign of easing up.

Yes, it is my opinion. But it also happens to be true. Kind of gives it that extra umph. You want me to justify evil as to not hurt someone's families feelings? Sorry, that's not going to happen. You may enjoy being lied to about everything, but I don't. I'm sorry this man died. I'm sorry that ANY man dies. I feel deeply for his family, but I am not going to sit idly by and watch everybody heap giant piles of crap from a buffet of lies onto their plates and then try to tell me it taste like chicken. It's time for people to take this country back from these elitists control freaks. How am I an "apologist for terrorists" by trying to put an end to terrorism? The Bush Family and their cronies fund terror, not a peep from people like you. I speak out against it, I'm an "apologist for terror". Amazing.

Heartless? What I think is heartless is people justifying what is going on here. That's what's heartless. What's heartless is leveling apartment buildings full of civilians with gunships in an attempt to assassinate a "Jordanian Al Qaeda operative" that no one has seen or knows anything about, yet he slips in and out of Najaf and Baghdad like he's a freaking ghost. Pretty convenient I must say. Or have you heard? Citizens of Fallujah have to be retina scanned and logged into US databases before they can go back into their homes that no longer exist. Freedom? Liber-tay? I'm not judging anyone's soul here. I'll pray for Mr. Tillman at the approprate time. But here...now...I'm calling it as it is...again, sadly....

You must not be reading posts.... or reading them without your illuminati glasses on.. There is just respect for those people who have the courage to fight the war (for their own personalreasons, whether for college money or for their own "patriotic" resons... Did you vote> did you do any grass roots advocacy or do you just post your brilliant thoughts so that others can do the dirty work>

Yes, I voted. Yes, I'm active. I read the post. I saw the subject, gave my opinion. I think I am honoring Pat Tillman EVEN MORE by not trying to justify his death. Another tool of the REAL terror has been killed serving a system that could care less about him. It sucks. I am truly sorry for his family. I know what it's like to lose people. But ENOUGH is ENOUGH.

College money? Are you freaking kidding me?

SO in what way are you active? if you don't mind me asking.. perhaps I will also "act" with you, Lou, I do not discount your fundamental belief.. In more ways then one I agree that "Another tool of the REAL terror has been killed serving a system that could care less about him." But this also implies that the system has ever cared about those that battle their "causes". I.e. vietnam vets... and so forth.. but what i am trying to point out is that their is too much "talky talky" and less action... If the populace which i might say leans towards this "understanding" then why do we not mobilize and have the COURAGE enough to lock down city hall, lock down congress - do we not have the "freedom" to do so such as the Ukrainians:?
