On the war issue, Patton said it best:

"You're not here to die for your country, but to make the other bastard die for his"

Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route?

I agree Vic, but we all know there are many types of soldiers.

A portion of them ,depending on the cause of the war, are INSISTENT they either die fighting, or win.

There is no honor in war if there is no harm from it. Under what pretense would a man accept a "burning sensation" to lay down and comply with ideals and laws that contradict his entire lifes history, past accomplishments, and future hopes at a life worth living?

This is just a pretense to police state.

New way of hurting oneself. If it became a household item. Doing it multiple times could wear down your nerves. What's next? Amputated arm? Leg?

It also sounds like it could be altered into a drug. Skeptic.

It should be noted that it is possible for a person to die from stress caused by pain.

Maybe the government should be communicating with protesters, instead of dispersing them with force, eh?
You're right of course. Choice of the weapon is a false dilemma, like when a parent about to beat his child gives the boy a choice between the belt or the switch. But given the alternatives - if the state MUST harm me - I'd prefer the harm wasn't permanent.

Given what I know of the "authorities" who will ultimately be the owners of these systems, I view this with great trepidation. It is non lethal, but it is force.
Well, I don't see how it really infringes on our rights any more than other weapons out there. If you're a cop with a heat beam, and I've got an AK-47... my chances of winning are still equal to my chances of winning now, without this device.

I don't ascribe good intentions to those who possess high technology at present. I think that non-lethal technology is a double-edged sword. It avoids bloodshed and death, but it encourages using force against opponents that may be peaceful and seeking resolution to problems, ie. mass meetings.
But the state is ALREADY using such force, with rubber bullets/water cannons etc. Look at the WTO protests in Seattle.

BTW, it is the perfect torture device. I am sure the CIA is thrilled. :(
Considering they already have means to torture that can cause permanent damage, I'm not so concerned - relieved even. If they need to torture you for information, they're going to one way or another.

I agree with fush. It's not any worse than anything out there. It can damage your nerves, but mace can damage your eyes. If it was used as a torture device, it would probably hurt LESS than others, such as ripping one's fingernails off, though it may be more harmful in the long run. Like I said, do it enough times and the nerve will be dead, restricting use of that area, possibly needing amputation.

But I am completely against it being a household item.

Why exactly? I'd rather see fathers accidentally firing a hot burst of pain on their sneaky girlfriend's boyfriend as he slips in the house than filling him with lead.

I am not in favor of making war easier.

Maybe it's just me but I think the bloodshed and atrocities are the only thing that motivates us not to be in a constant state of war.

War should not be easy, war should not be fun.

Yeah, but I can imagine a heat ray-based version of paintball could be a hell of a lot of fun.
