National Sanctity of Human Life Day, 2007 For Immediate Release Office of the Press Secretary January 19, 2007 National Sanctity of Human Life Day, 2007 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America America was founded on the principle that we are all endowed by our Creator with the right to life and that every individual has dignity and worth. National Sanctity of Human Life Day helps foster a culture of life and reinforces our commitment to building a compassionate society that respects the value of every human being. Among the most basic duties of Government is to defend the unalienable right to life, and my Administration is committed to protecting our society's most vulnerable members. We are vigorously promoting parental notification laws, adoption, abstinence education, crisis pregnancy programs, and the vital work of faith-based groups. Through the "Born-Alive Infants Protection Act of 2002," the "Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003," and the "Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004," we are helping to make our country a more hopeful place. One of our society's challenges today is to harness the power of science to ease human suffering without sanctioning practices that violate the dignity of human life. With the right policies, we can continue to achieve scientific progress while living up to our ethical and moral responsibilities. National Sanctity of Human Life Day serves as a reminder that we must value human life in all forms, not just those considered healthy, wanted, or convenient. Together, we can work toward a day when the dignity and humanity of every person is respected. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Sunday, January 21, 2007, as National Sanctity of Human Life Day. I call upon all Americans to recognize this day with appropriate ceremonies and to underscore our commitment to respecting and protecting the life and dignity of every human being. Here's something along the same lines I posted in my blog recently;

Religious Freedom Day? Not really. Chuck Colson, who knows a thing or two about sinful behavior, joins the chorus of those who manage to complain about oppression while enjoying majority status in this country; A very small but vocal minority pound away at teachers and school officials, intimidating them into thinking that the public school must be a “religion-free zone.” Their attacks have resulted in the religious aspects of even Christmas being banned, Christian students being silenced, and teachers being censored. A climate of fear about religion surrounds too many schools. How he interprets the government disallowing his kind to promote their particular take on theism during school hours an "attack" I have no idea. But have no fear. Those terrible attackers are about to be bested, But you and I have a great opportunity to stop this discrimination against our children who want to express their faith at school. January 16 is Religious Freedom Day, and President Bush’s special proclamation will ask schools to commemorate the day. That should solve all of our society's problems. It must be all that discrimination against religious freedom that makes little Johnny unable to read, do basic math or find Iraq on a map. Perhaps Colson's point is that as long as little Johnny's already pretty dumb, he should be allowed to put that ignorance to good use as a Christian. While many public schools are denying students’ rights to freely express their faith, the U.S. Department of Education has issued guidelines that clearly list and explain those rights. For example, students have the legal right to express their faith in their assignments; they can witness to their classmates; they can read their Bibles at school; and they can pray. But many teachers have never seen these guidelines and believe they cannot allow these or any other religious expressions in their classrooms. It’s fitting that Religious Freedom Day comes on January 16, the day after we commemorate Martin Luther King’s birthday. After all, King’s religious faith was the foundation of his fight for civil rights. And it was religious freedom in America that allowed him to express his faith against a dreadful evil and move the entire nation. While many people will commemorate Martin Luther King Day, few even know about Religious Freedom Day. That’s why an organization called Gateways to Better Education is leading a national campaign to raise awareness about Religious Freedom Day. Gateways helps public schools teach Judeo-Christian history, thought, and values. It has also developed a website, ReligiousFreedomDay.com, to provide you everything you need to commemorate the day in your church, your home, and your school. It's so typical in situations like this that Colson and his fellow Christains fail to realize that there's more than one religion in America. Is he going to be as tolerant when little Mohammad opens his Qur'an or prays to Mecca? Is he willing to allow little Billy to meditate in keeping with his Buddhist beliefs? The issue here isn't about religious freedom. It's another poorly crafted and ill-conceived attempt to introduce religious belief into our schools. The creationists and Intelligent Designers have failed to further this agenda. This new attempt will fail for the same reason, and surprisingly its failure will owe little to atheistic opposition. It will fail because people of other faiths than Christianity see what this is all about as well as we do. If there's to be true religious freedom, they'll demand that their groups be free to practice their religion as well. And the Christian right won't cotton to that idea. This isn't about religious freedom, it's about Christian preference. And that should never be permitted in the United States.

I think he missed the whole Constitution, and instead was ogling "sexy nuns & preachers monthly" which he had wedged in the Constitutions binding.
