Is it wrong to Work on MLK Day?

I think he is one of the most important individuals in American History. Not only for the changes he influenced, but he set a good precedent of how to bring about change. Through non-violence. Too bad the Muslims of the world have not studied his methods.

To answer my own question, it is truely an insult to work today. It dishonors one of the Greatest Americans this country has ever had.

Not a lot of work would get done if we took days off to comemorate heros. If catholic countries took that approach I don't think they would ever work they have so many saints days.

It's not disrespectful for an American to work on MLK day. It might well be disrespectful to MLK's legacy to push such intolerance as you are doing, though.

MLK would have probably told his followers to work very hard today; towards racial equality, equal opportunity, and peace and understanding through non violent means on this day in his memory.

I agree that Martin was a great American. I suspect that there are far better ways to show respect than to take a day off. Hard to see how goofing off qualifies as respectful.

I would rather take off work to celebrate Gandhi's birthday.

I am working today.

The most respectful thing we can do for King is to meditate on who actually murdered him.

I'm also at work and I'm also a vet who doesn't get veterans day off either. I have a dream - retirement.

Honestly you can honor King, just by remembering what he accomplished.

Ditto. Sucks, doesn't it? Like others have said, honor is great, but I need money. It's why I have a job in the first place.

I wonder...

Would MLK have supported Black History Month and a holiday?

I don't think he would have.

Having a whole month dedicated to Black History, and Hispanic Heritage, but not a White Heritage, is racism.

That, and it draws attention to differences.

So as someone already wrote in this thread, probably not.

Personally, and as a black person, I think it's stupid to have a Black History month.

You can take the day off if your employer LETS you take it off. You don't commemorate anyones life by losing your job.

That very obvious statement was prompted by the memory of two different occasions where co-workers TOLD their bosses they were taking off although the day wasn't even a national holiday at that time.

Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots.

Not to me or the King family. Or a group of jurors: MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY: King Family statement on the Justice Department's "Limited investigation" of the MLK Assassination
Quote:
After hearing and reviewing the extensive testimony and evidence, which had never before been tested under oath in a court of law, it took the Memphis jury only one (1) hour to find that a conspiracy to kill Dr. King did exist. Most significantly, this conspiracy involved agents of the governments of the City of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the United States of America. The overwhelming weight of the evidence also indicated that James Earl Ray was not the triggerman and, in fact, was an unknowing patsy.

No, it's not wrong to work on MLK day. 'Specially if you're not an American.

Obviously I meant it towards Americans. Obviously you don't get Washington Birthday off. As we don't get some of your British Heros off.
