As you know by state of the union address today that President Bush is going to send in more then 20 thousand new troops to clear neighborhoods of insurgents, weapons, and perhaps a few outsiders called "terrorists". The additional troops are needed, he said, so they can keep them from coming back or moving in once the neighborhoods have been cleared of those who might appose the current Bagdad Government. Another town (the one which was once the home town of Saddam) will also be targeted by the employment of 4 thousand troops (part of the 20 some people to be deployed). My question for this poll is "should Congress approve of a new war budget that would be used to support those troops, or not". The "Edit" button would not permit me to make correction in poll question. It should have read "20 thousand new military men (troops) instead of "20 troops". |

Secondly, the American people have spoken and they want their government to strategize a way to stand up Iraqi troops as we phase out our own. What Bush is doing now, is trying to rely on "old faithful" to pull him out after Rumsnamaras plan of sweeping force failed, due to his poor tactical planning ability which his, was never founded on PROTECTING WHAT YOU TAKE. This new plan will not work in my opinion, since it still presents a large, ominous force that is able to be struck by small group, or individual attacks as their tactics (the opposing force) permit. The Iraqi people have got to win this from the inside out, and I personally don't know if they can set aside their religious dogma to reach a sustainable multi-party government based along the lines that have been chosen thus far by the current people in the system. Maybe the new leadership in our military will prepare properly to counter-guerilla tactics, but I don't think they can effectively combat the cultural terror tactics without the belief and full support of the people of Iraq, united for Iraq. We will see if they leave us out to dry..... They have their reasons pro and con... which will they choose? So the question remians, if you were in Congress would you approve another billion or so in funding so Bush can have his last ditch effort at creating a new Iraq out of the ruins he has created with his war. You stated that the Iraqis clear a sector and then the insurgents return when they move on to another target. (Bush's explaination also). Of course they will return, they live in the neighborhoods that were cleared during those acts of mass discrimination. The insurgents did not come from Iran or elsewhere, they are Iragis just like those Iragis who help our miltiary who did house to house searches in sectors where violence is erupting, Arresting those who wish to attack other sectors that are user friendly to the USA objectives. If they arrest those "insurgents" during those midnight raids then how can they return, who is letting them out of prison? Clearing out the people we do not want to have elected during the next democratic election is not the real answer, those Iragis of different sects must find a way to live in peace with each other so they can all work together to rebuild their country. No one has come up with a plan to reach that objective. You cannot just distroy a neighborhood and expect all the men, women, and children to just vanish - they got no place else to go if they cannot return to their homes after they were forced out. | |
