Bombing in Somalia

Critics of the Bush Administration has condemned the war in Iraq as, among other things, a diversion from the war on terror, which will result mere in the inflaming of anti-Americanism and increase terrorism.

Yesterday, an American warplane bombed a base in Somalia where it was believed those who were responsible for the '98 embassy bombings were residing.

Is such a bombing against such a target a legitimate action in the war on terrorism?

Yes, it is. Whether it is effective remains to be seen.

Sounds like it's gunships, not bombs.
U.S. Launches New Attacks in Somalia, More U.S. Airstrikes in Somalia Target al-Qaida Terrorists Wanted for U.S. Embassy Bombings - CBS News

Either way, collateral damage from such strikes is counterproductive to the stated aims of stopping terrorism.

Such assaults are, in fact, themselves military terror from the sky. This is not the best way of stopping terrorism, but rather a means of stirring up more.

Pardon my cynicism about the US Empire...

I think the Islamic councils were getting close to bringing law and order to Somalia. The people there are sick of warlordism, but the US isn't.

The Law and Order of the Islamic Council was killing people for watching the World Cup of TV wasn't it PH. No thanks to this level of Law and Order, I'd prefer the martial law of today.

Depends on your definition of empire.

I think it qualifies and so do many in the establishment. However, they approve of imperialism, while I do not.

And your disdain for Europe aside, they have an economy that is roughly the equivalent of North America's with a larger market. I wouldn't term them "has beens", thinking it might sound ignorant of these facts.

Some might think it takes an Empire to topple a government with a substantial military a half a world away, capture and execute its leader and then threaten the neighboring country with the same treatment. All the while making no plans to exit the first country...

Military has beens, power has beens, not exactly candidates for the power centers of the world.

This may soon be said of the USA.

We can always hope...

Ah, yes, a world ruled by China or India, who have no illusions about their own power hunger, would be much better, there will always be a new Empire to fill the power void.

I believe they have already bombed the embassy and killed Americans previously.

Black has nothing to do with it, think of Dufar in Sudan and the cause of the ongoing genocide.
