![]() Iconoclast Posts: 5,077 | New Years Resolution The US today is as threatened as the Republic of Rome that Cicero tried to save. The real problems Rome had were, it failed to control its economy and military. Can we make it our New Year's Resolution to do better than Rome did? Consider the draft. Rome used its citizens for wars, and when they returned home, they had lost the land essential to supporting their families, and had to compete with slave labor for work. Our young who go into military service end up as Vets holding signs on street corners too often. We are failing to assimilating a significant number of our young into the productivity of our nation and the middle class. If we do reinstate the draft, we will radically ulter the lives of thousands of young people. Those needing jobs today don't have to compete with slaves (?), but with machines and immigrants and third world countries, and this is destroying the economic base of the middle class, which will eventual destroy our whole economy. Walmart maybe offering a solution as it brings us down gently or it could be contributing to our fall? Rome depleted its gold mines and was forced to cut its coins with cheaper metals. This devalued their currency. The US doesn't back the dollar with gold any more (it depleted its gold mines), but uses its gross national product, which depends on oil for its high productivity, to back the dollar. That means, an industrial turn down, or decrease in GNP, will devastate the value of the dollar. Multi-national companies exploiting third world labor and resources, contribute to our GNP, without benefiting us with middle wage jobs. That is to say, the economic needs of our country are working against the citizens of the country. When the US exhausted its gold supply, and then stopped being an oil exporter and became an oil importer, it was clearly and unquestionablely, on the path of economic disaster. We have to compensate for the loose of revenue, and do this by exploiting other countries, and this compensation for lost revenue means tax payers supporting very expensive military action around the world, and a national policy, and industrial practices that are hurting the middle class. Rome could not control its military! Yahoo's such as Ceasar were going off on wars, supported by Roman tax payers, and these conquers with armies loyal to them, threatened Rome! Following WWII those who gained power during the war years were able to maintian that power, and have lead our nation down the military path. Special interest groups have been running the US ever since WWII, not the citizens who really don't have a clue what is happening, but know if they are for or against gay marriages, and have voting on this, confused with having political/economic power. The military technology enabling the US to engage in acts of war within 4 hours, any where in the world, and to do more damage than armies could do in months during WWII, means citizens no longer control their military force. For economic and technological reasons, the citizens have lost control of tax paid military force. Can we do what Rome failed do? If not, what will happen? New Year Resolution- is to resolve the troubles that caused Rome to fall and threaten our own Republic. |
