Or perhaps the Irish before him, or the Chinese before them. But nothing ever came of any of their efforts and nowhere in the Americas do they speak Scandanavian, Celtic or Chinese. It was Columbus' expeditions that led to the European exploration and colonization of the New World, and eventually to the country we now live in, the United States.

As to Hitler and Genghis Khan day, Columbus was neither. (In fact, it might be instructive for daniel to read the history of Genghis Khan, who, far from being the demon we paint him, was an extraordinary and visionary leader) Was Columbus mercenary? Sure, probably, but so what... so were many great explorers. As I keep pointing out to the Christians, slavery was condoned in the Bible... the point being that morality is, to a point, relative to the times people lived in, and whatever evil was done subsequent to Columbus' voyages, it should not subtract from either the significance of his discoveries or the courage of his explorations.

Why not use 21st century standards to judge 15th century historical figures? I'll bet Columbus didn't even know how to use the Internet either. Like, how lame is that?

Some people look up to the worst people in the world. Some people even look up to gwbush. Who has tortured, raped and murdered over a half a million innocent people so far. And he is just getting started. A lot of people look up to Columbus who liked to send little warnings to the natives....like depopulate entire island populations, then let a few live after he cut off the noses of a few as warnings.
