"Just 32 percent, the lowest number ever, say Iraq was a threat that required immediate military action a year ago," the poll reported.

"Less than half, 47 percent, now say the United States did the right thing taking military action in Iraq, the lowest support recorded in CBS News/New York Times polls since the war began."

Quote:
In March last year, at the time of the invasion, nearly seven in 10 Americans thought it was the right thing to do.

The poll said 56 percent of Americans thought Bush was "mostly telling the truth but still hiding something" when he spoke to them about Iraq.

It said 61 percent of respondents now believed the administration did not try hard enough to reach a diplomatic solution before going to war in Iraq -- a reversal of the public's belief last year during the war.

The poll said six in 10 Americans approved of Bush's handling of the threat of terrorism and 39 percent approved of his handling of the economy.

These polls ebb and flow with events in Iraq and how these events are presented to them by thier favorite media outlet. Foxnews has these poll numbers higher than CBS. After Saddam was captured the numbers were higher. Currently there is more intense violence in Iraq and this is being blown up as the end times by certain new organs. Later this year when Bin Laden is captured, probably close to the election, than the poll numbers will go up again.

dave, you're such a cynic.

well, it seems to be 'the truth' that iraq was not a threat, that bush did rush to war and then bungle it, and that his economic policies are contemptable. people are slowly realizing this, as people slowly often do.

they don't really ebb and flow. they've been steadily dropping. it is a trend, not a random occurance.

it's kind of funny how, when no proof of bush's threat allegations have proven true, that there are still all these people out there who think that it's impossible that he could have been full of crap. in hindsight, i wish i didn't believe him myself.

bush's diplomacy will be noted in future textbooks as how not to conduct diplomacy.

You're definitely right about Bush's diplomacy skills. I meant that opinion polls in general ebb and flow, not specifically support for the war. I still maintain that OBL will show up later this year and support for the war will rise again.
There's a lot that has been riding on the WMD issue, you mention the threat allegations. Really Bush didn't stress the WMD until he started dealing with the UN. The UN had made a big deal about the WMDs with the inspections etc. I clearly remember Bush talking about hitting Iraq before Saddam became an immenent threat, not calling Saddam an immenent threat now, then. EVERYONE in the UN believed there were WMDs in Iraq, Saddam used them, then played a shell game with UN inspectors for several years before kicking out the inspectors. Hans Blix, certainly no Bush supporter, believed there were WMDs. Since troops entered Iraq last year, there has been evidence of WMDs, labs, hollowed out munitions, nasty water in the river... There are no actual weapons, true. But to say they never existed is rediculous, of course they did. Saddam WAS working on building a nuclear weapon, this is also incontrovertable. What is indispute is how close to actually having a bomb. Someone in this forum actually stated that Bush insinuated Saddam would have had a bomb in a few weeks, Bush never said any such thing. The time horizon is really not important, Saddam was trying to get a bomb period. With a bomb, it is highly likely that he would have sold it to the highest bidder. OBL, with a nuke would definitely have used it against the US.
I don't really like much of what Bush is doing but I am happy he is prosecuting this war on terror and I'm happy he invaded Iraq. I hope he is able to instigate the toppling of Irans current government and Syrias. Those governments are not worthy of diplomacy.
