| Sedimentary Rock Posts: 1 | President Bush and Civil Right President Bush's distain for the judicial branch of government is well documented. I feel he truly resents the fact that they often get to make the final call on constitutional matters. In fact, he recently dubbed himself the decider. He scornfully labels all judges who view the Constitution as the protector of individual rights as being "activist". I personally would hope that all judges would be activist when it comes to protecting individual rights. I certainly wouldn't want a judge to be too laid back or complacent in their sacred duty to uphold constititutionally recognized issues. As an example President Bush recently sponsored another futile attempt to have an admendment added to the constituion which would define marriage as being between a man and a woman ONLY! Notice that he trots this issue out every time we approach a national election. He appeals to his national christian "born again" base.. He supports the fact that gay marriage in New York has now been removed from the hands of the judiciary, where it belongs, and handed back to the state legislators for further debate. He has actually advocated that the gay marriage issue should be voted on nationally to determine its legality. If civil rights issues were decided by the electorate, the rights of miniorities would usually be defeated. If we went by majority rule, women might still not have the right to vote, politicians, like the late Govenor Wallace, would be legally standing in the school house door to block black admittance, and black females would still be compelled to give up their seat on a bus to a white man. Civil rights never was and never should be determined by a show of hands. President Bush mirrows the Christian Right stance on all matters related to gay rights. Every Sunday, words of scorn and distain are aimed at gays from church pulpits. This constant diatribe of demonization absolutely destroys the self esteem of gay youth. Because it is considered "a problem" countless numbers of gay youngsters have been disowned and thrown out of the house by their parents. Suicide remains the leading cause of death among gay teenagers. It mystyfies me how such ministers as Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Rev. Dobson can sleep well at night knowing that the blood of these youngsters is likely on their hands. Today, Bush vetoed the stem cell research admendment. This is the first piece of legislation which he has vetoed in his 6.5 years in the presidency. The bill had been overwelmingly passed by both the House and the Senate. It was sponsored by our own Republican representative here in Delaware, Mike Castle. Key members of the Republican controlled Senate like Orin Hatch and Bill Frist also voted yea. All national polls strongly indicate that the American public endorses it. Passage would have enhanced the chances of finding cures for such deadly diseases as cancer, diabetits, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzhymiers. The eggs that would have been used are not muman beings! They are unclaimed clumps of cells which have been kept in cold storags for years. After an allotted time, if they are not choosen, to be carried by a female and seeded by a male they are discarded in the trash. Once again Pres. Bush is on the wrong side of a moral issue. The Terry Shivo case turned out to be an embarassment nationally and internationally. After almost 20 yers in a vegatative state, the doctors informed the family that she was brain dead and had zero chance of recovevery. President Bush rushed back to Washington from Texas in an unsuccessful attempt to have the judicial ruling reversed. Bush tried. without success, to block the wishes of her husband. Once again he was on the wrong side of both civil rights and morality. President Bush needs to be reminded that homelessness, war, crime, AIDS, and our entry into a pre-emptive war in Iraq are all real moral issues he shoulf be comcerned about. Hate and intolerance, unlike sexual orientation, are not characteristics a child is born with. I recently composed a poem which is entitled, The Death of Innoncence. Our local chapter of the ACLU is considering printing it is their summer news letter. Part ot it goes like this: A babies mind resembles a blank slate. Newborn are not predisposed to hate. The seeds of life are ones of love, Sowed by God and nurtured from above. And we, each made in Gods' image on this earth, have a solemn duty to affirm our children's worth. They need guidance to keep tolerance alive, for without it, surely hate and bigotry will thrive," President Bush, who bills himself as a "compassionate conservative" has not demonstrated such by his actions. Although I am always concerned about the trreatment of miniorities and the have-nots among us, please don't brand me as a "bleeding heart" liberal. I am just of the opinion that love in all it's many forms, is the one powerful over riding force that can bring contentment and meaning to our lives. It was Mother Teresa who once said, "Try not to judge people. If you judge others than you are not giving your love, Instead try to help people, even though they may be different than you, by acting to meet their needs. It is not what they may or may not have done, but what you have done to help them that matters in God's eyes." I sincerely doubt that President Bush is even vaguely familiar with a message such as this. |
