Since the end of WWII and the start of the Cold War, we simultaneously wanted quick access to the Soviet Union and the ability to watchdog the shipping lanes for our ever-precious oil. The only real way to get anything done over there will be to withdraw completely, formally apologize to all Middle Eastern nations, stop arms sales, and just purchase oil and hope for the best. |
