| I'm the camel Location: Maryland Posts: 657 | Public Conservatism Are a lot of people Conservative simply because being Consevative is so popular? Are they simply trying to demonstrate they're part of the good old gang, so they won't have to raise any embarassing issues? |

| I'm the camel Location: Maryland Posts: 657 | Pardon me for adding in before anyone has responded, but it seems to me that Conservatism has become so completely dominant in our culture that people try to jump on the bandwagon, even when they have misgivings, as has religious fundamentalism, when I think most people would be more tolerant if they didn't perceive a pressure to be a literalist, on both religion and politics. |

| moderat-e/o-r Location: boston Posts: 11,184 | seems to me that as far as mainstream politics is concerned, "conservatism" is whatever guys like karl rove says that it is.. i've always felt that it was too broad a term to begin with.. there are social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, constitutionalist conservatives... while bush's suckups like to call themselves conservative, what they are supporting is the furthest thing from conservatism.. these people support an administration that wantonly borrows and spends insane amounts of money.. an administration that has drastically increased the size of the federal government, while minimizing civil liberties and the sovereignty of states.. increased foreign entanglements and nation building.. is that what conservatism is?? even in its most generalized definition, conservatism never included such policies.. i agree with you - calling yourself a conservative definitely seems to be in vogue these days.. |
