| Korndogs Posts: 38 | Big gov't or big business? The way I see it-- In this country we have two choices. We can either have big government running America, or we can have big business running America. I would relate big government running America to the Democrat party with their many industry regulations and big gov't platform whereas I would relate big business running America to the Republican party with their small gov't platform coupled with their pandering to big business. For me, it seems very easy to discern the lesser evil between the two. It seems only logical to not want big business running America. Right now, with the Republican party in power, big business has more power than ever. I find this to be a cause for alarm. comments? |

But, in no way does big biz have more power today than they did in previous periods of history. I'd suggest you read about the "robber barons" and trusts of the late 19th and early 20th century. | |

I guess my thinking is antiquated because I always thought we had more than two choices, particularly here in "the land of the free". Your statement should be more clearly articulated to state that we only have two choices of illegal, unconstitutional government, Democrat, or Republican. I'm surprised you don't feel more like cattle being herded up when you are left to decide between two bad choices. Where is your imagination? |

| Look Stuff Up Posts: 810 | Small business people by far employ the most people in America. Big business is like a sliver, though we hear about them from those that hate them and try to make political gain from that. IMO, smaller government is always best so people in the private sector can grow possible richer. Governments survive by eating the profits of private business and they can not survive without the private sector. People in government try and tell you what to do all the time, but they are dependent on others like little children in diapers. Just like regular ol' people, the top 5 to 10 percent control 80 or 90% of the capital. Equitable wealth distribution is not a baseless, wedge issue. It means something. It has been shown that when that balance is too far to the side of too few controlling too much, crime rates go up, and the over-all economic health of the nation is at risk. So, this is not "class warfare", it is serious business. That being said, who fooled all you people into thinking the democratic party is not in bed with big business? Remember that Clinton came to power moving to the "middle". What that means, translated into real-speak rather than newspeak, is that he kept talking about the right things, and was less likely to introduce the government into your bedroom, but he moved the party economically much closer to the "big business agenda". The left's position today is closer to what the right's position was 20 years ago and the right is just willing to sell your great-greatgrandchildren down the river. But, that being said, I still do not believe the answer is to scrap our system, the answer is to make the left the left again and get the right back to the right and well, stop being bed-room nazis. | Igneous Magma Posts: 249 | There are many of us small business people who invest in big business for our retirement funds. Many of us do not have the background or knowledge of how to make our small businesses large; many do not want to anyway. I owned a small book store for years and my passion was reading the books and discussing them with my customers. The thought of trying to work an Amazon.com would be horrible to me. But I will invest in their stock. There is no right or wrong when we talk about supply and demand that sets our prices. On the other hand we have the government setting how much profit we can keep after they take their share of our money. That is happening and it started in the 60s when a voter base showed they wanted the government handling everything. It caused our interest rates to go sky high along with the prices of our merchandise. I have much more faith in individual businessmen (big or small) than I do in any level of government but the only way to control the size of the government is for us to stop asking them for more and more of their dollars. It will turn out to be a control over our income and our taxes will only redistribute our wealth removing more profits from the very businesses who sign our payroll checks and furnish our retirement plans. I'm seeing a lack of work ethics in the last 30 years and a demand for more safety nets under all of us. We can't have it both ways. If we demand more from the government the big businesses will move off shore or close up. If we tell the government to get lost and we start operating as individuals we might be able to afford the limited governmeht that we want. I always ask people if they can feed and clothe their children without federal aid? Do they need the welfare checks they receive? If the government schools cannot teach the kids to read and write should people still have to pay their high property taxes? The federal government is cheating all of us with their terrible managment skills and high costs. When is enough, enough? |
